TRINITY GET WIN AND BONUS POINT!! 09/12/2006 Trinity 31pts – Thomond 20pts After a rough start where they twice fell ten points behind their opponents, Trinity managed to come back and win the game and crucially take a much deserved bonus point for scoring four tries at a bright but cold College Park on Saturday. Trinity started the game in poor form making unforced errors that gave Thomond good field position. The visitors cashed in on their first opportunity in the third minute, when from a line out in close their very effective maul gave them a try which they converted. Trinity came back up the pitch to be awarded a penalty which Johnny Watt kicked. into a stiff breeze. Thomond showed great control and dominated long periods of the first half. They kicked a penalty of their own. Trinity showed glimpses of their potential when from a brave turnover in a ruck by flanker Ross Condron, the ball was quickly moved the width of the field in a movement which featured several sets of hands that put #8 Peter McFeely in the corner for a try. Johnny Watt converted to bring the scores level at 10 all. Thomond came back to kick another penalty. They followed this by scoring a length of the field interception after Trinity had played some superb rugby and looked poised to score but got sloppy in the latter phases for a long ambitious pass to be gratefully intercepted by the visiting centre who went 90 metres untouched. 20-10 down at half time Trinity knew they had to improve with the wind at their backs. Thomond came out in the second half determined to hold on to their lead. The students seemed powerless or not interested in closing the gap. Play continued in the middle zone of the field without either team really threatening for the first fifteen minutes of the second half. The game changed dramatically when from a scrum inside the Thomond half Trinity pulled off a training ground move/pattern that was superbly executed and resulted in right wing and Irish U19s Shane Monahan diving over in the corner. This score seemed to pump life into the home team (and supporters) and from this moment there really was only one team in the game. Out half Johnny Watt after an indifferent first half began to dictate play and the team played some wonderful rugby. After some heavy pressure on the visitors line Thomond managed to turn the ball over and clear the ball – but missed touch, Johnny Watt in the unfamiliar position of emergency wing was in position to gather the ball about 30 metres out on the right hand touchline. He took the ball running chipped the opposing winger, re-gathered a somewhat fortunate bounce and dived in for a sensational individual try. He backed this up, as only he can, by banging the conversion over from the side line, much to the appreciating home crowd! Trinity, now flying, were being willed on by their supporters to go for the bonus point. This sometimes very elusive bonus point came very quickly after another loose kick was gathered by full back Paul Gillespie who initiated a superb counter attack where he handled twice as did flanker Ross Condron who gave the ball to Shane Monahan who drew the cover before putting his skipper Brian Hastings in for the much needed bonus point try. Johnny Watt converted again from the corner to cap a fine second half performance. This was the students fourth win in a row including the colours and the very young squad (average age 20.7) are beginning to get to terms with the very physical nature of senior rugby. This win puts them up to fourth place in a very competitive division where very narrow margins are deciding the vast majority of games. Next Saturday (KO 2pm) they travel up to Kilternan to play old rivals DLSP in what will be the last game before the Christmas break. Trinity team; 15 Paul Gillespie, 14 Shane Monahan, 13 Brian Hastings, 12 Conor Donohue, 11 Killian Stafford (George Byron 70), 10 Johnny Watt, 9 Joey Burns (Eddie Hamilton 20) 1 Tristan Goodbody, 2 Matt Crockett (Ben Cunningham 70), 3 Andy King (Graham Murphy 55), 4 Shane Mullane (Roger Young 55), 5 Max Cantrell, 6 Ross Condron, 7 Shane Young, Peter McFeely U20s In a great weekend for the club Trinity U20s began to realise their undoubted potential with an emphatic 55-6 win over a well drilled Seapoint XV in wet and windy conditions in Santry. The students were superb in a devastating performance by the forwards. The backs began to display their great skill and speed to score some great tries. They now break for the Christmas holiday. After Christmas the students face eight tough JP Fanagan Premier league games to make the “top five” play offs. The top three go to represent Leinster in the All Ireland U20s quarter finals in April. The undefeated Trinity U20s B who are defending their JP Fanagan first Division title from last season played Blackrock College U20s B who came into the game in second place (to Trinity). The students were magnificent into the strong wet and windy conditions in the first half. The forwards “savaged” Rock up front in all departments and the backs and forwards superb continuity (passing and rucking) of the ball was as if it was a fine day! 6-3 up at half time but totally dominant into the wind, there could be only one winner with the wind. The Bs ran in six tries to win 37-3 in a truly awesome performance by coach Mark MacGinty’s men. With eight games to go and many challenges ahead Trinity look to be the team to beat in this division. More good news for the Club: Trinity 3rds scraped out a great 8-3 win away to Dundalk, well done lads. Trinity 2nds game V Old Belvedere was postponed; |
