A BRIDGE TOO FAR FOR TRINITY!! 06/10/2007 Oxford University 34pts Trinity 0 After a terrific week of playing, team building and training in Cambridge and Oxford this game against a fired up and well drilled Oxford was probably one game to many in such a short period of time. Trinity knew they were in trouble when they lost both their second rows by the first minute of the game! Roger Young went down in the warm up and John Byrne went down off the first contact of the game – which brought the appearance of back rower Eddie Molloy on to the 1st XV for the first time in two and half years. Eddie had played a full game the night before against Oxford U21s so was certainly making up for lost time with his second game in 18 hours!!. After these major set backs Trinity struggled to win any worthwhile possession at line out and scrum. With six enforced changes from the Cambridge game it was amazing testament to team spirit that Trinity kept the Joe Roff led Oxford to only five points at half time and had a good share of the game up to that time and played some good rugby under the circumstances. In the second half Trinity came out firing and played their best rugby of the game holding the ball for several phases and moving the bigger Oxford team around the field. Crucially Oxford forced a charge down on the halfway line and ran in unopposed to extend their lead. They then pretty much took over the game. Oxford ran in four tries against a ragged scrambling Trinity defence led by their inspirational captain Joey Burns. Some of these scores were from Trinity running ball from their own line and Oxford forcing the turnovers for scores. Oxford deserved their win and stopped a two game winning streak by Trinity over them. Team; 15 Gareth Murphy, 14 Brian Barnard, 13 Volney Rouse, 12 Paul Gillespie (Eddie Hamilton 55), 11 Shane Hanratty, 10 Johnny Watt, 9 Joey Burns, 1 Graham Murphy (Eoin O’Cuilleanean 50), 2 Ben Cunningham (Alan Mathews 65), 3 Tristan Goodbody , 4 Ciaran Condren, 5 John Byrne (Eddie Molloy 1), 6 Max Cantrell, 7 Shane Young, 8 Richard Morrow. The 2nds led by Captain and centre Eddie Hamilton had a great tour, they followed their convincing win in Cambridge (48-5) with a hard fought win over Oxford U21s 28-18. Prop Craig Telford coming up with the crucial score in the final minute of the game. This tour will hopefully cement the foundations for a great season for the very talented 2nd XV. Other News; Trinity U20s started their league campaign with an impressive win over Old Belvedere 40-5. The U20s played some superb rugby obtaining the bonus point for four tries before half time. The competition format is different this season. There are two conferences of seven teams with the top three going through to a “super six” scenario – with points carried over from your conference games against the other two teams who go through. This should provide a much more competitive structure. The key is qualifying in the top three in your conference. A hastily put together U20s B squad with only one player from last season, showed their potential with 85–5 hammering of Kilkenny U20s in College park. Not bad as College actually starts today!! The Trinity senior 3rd XV started their season with a friendly against Wicklow RFC. The Thirds with several new players to the club played well for the first half but fell away to lose 34-7 |
