Ballynahinch beat Trinity - in Tough Encounter! 07/03/2009 Ballynahinch 23pts Trinity 13pts Trinity travelled north to play top of the league contender and AIB cup semi finalist Ballynahinch who are having an outstanding season with away wins against Shannon and Galwegians in the AIB cup. ‘Hinch’ have been hammering teams at home and the fast improving students were generally given no chance. The home team have several professionals and Ulster academy players. After a two hour bus delay in Newry due to a combination of shoppers and a one lane motorway because of road-works, this was not the ideal preparation for the game as the team only arrived 45 minutes beforehand. Trinity played with the wind and rain in the first half, and struggled to get any change out of the well marshalled home defence. Likewise ‘Hinch’ struggled with most of the possession to break the student defensive line. Trinity had two opportunities to score tries when scrum half Eddie Hamiliton and wing Colin Murphy went close, but could not put it together to score. Centre Richard Brady did kick two well struck penalties to give Trinity the lead at half time. 6-0 was never going to be enough in the conditions and within five minutes the home side had drawn level 6-6 with two penalties. On 15 minutes they were ahead with another easy kick. Tries were hard to come by, but the home side did manage to score. Two players looked to have illegally crossed, but crucially the referee gave the score. ‘Hinch’ scored again when the students sloppily turned the ball, and ran in from half way. Trinity then began to find a bit of shape and played some good rugby under the circumstances. They scored the try of the game when centre Eoin Fleck finished off some great approach work after a break by Richard Brady and some good driving by the Trinity forwards. It was good to welcome Eoin Fleck back after being out all season with injury. Special mention must go to medical student Bill Walsh who after five years in the club made his first start on the wing. This was a disappointing result for the visitors against quality opposition. It was the first league loss since Christmas. The positives were that they stood up to the massive home pack in all phases of the game. The Trinity defence was back to its best after a poor show in Malone in the last game. The Trinity attack which was so potent against Malone struggled all game against a suffocating defence. Next week Saturday 14th . Trinity have a break from league play and host Oxford University at College park 2pm kick off 15 Paul Gillespie, 14 Colin Murphy, 13 Richard Brady, 12 Eoin Fleck, 11 Bill Walsh, 10 David Joyce (Tim McCoy 60), 9 Eddie Hamilton, 1 Colm Goode Paddy McCabe 55), 2 Mark Murdoch (Alan Mathews 60), 3 James Gethings, 4 Pat Danahy, 5 Scott LaValla, 6 Max Cantrell (Eddie Molloy 60), 7 Shane Young, 8 Brian Coyle. Other news was not good for the club either; Trinity 2nd XV who are top of section B in the J1 league, played third place team in section A Old Belvedere. Trinity led with 2 minutes to go only for the home team to squeak over a drop goal to lose 14-13. Trinity were most unfortunate to lose, and seemed to come out on the wrong end of a massive penalty count. They played all the positive rugby on the day but struggled to get beyond 2nd phase. Trinity scored a great try by captain Johnny Iliff but this proved not to be enough. They now turn their attentions back to league play next week in college Park when they host DLSP. Trinity U20s played some of their best rugby of the season in the first half against UCD in College park. Running the ball from all parts of the field they scored two superb tries by centre Peter Finnegan, and captain and Full back Tim McCoy running up a 14-3 lead. They should have converted two more opportunities but did not manage to do so. Unfortunately Trinity could not keep up the pace and let UCD back into the game with three penalties and two tries to win 21-14. Trinity U20s B game was cancelled against Guinness RFC. They now have to beat Seapoint next week to secure a place in the play offs (top four). Trinity Senior 3rds lost their last league game of the season 35-17 in Old Belvedere. They now face Monkstown in the Moran cup. |
