Belfast Harlequins - Too Good! 07/01/2006 Trinity 14pts Belfast Harlequins 41pts Belfast Harlequins very professional outfit gave Trinity a huge lesson in finishing on Saturday at College park in perfect conditions for rugby. The students started brightly and played some good rugby when they had the ball. Barry Kinsella, Darren Hayes and Johnny Watt all made breaks that looked promising, but failed to amount to any points. With the students dominating the opening exchanges it was a cruel blow when Harlequins and Ulster scrum half Reece Spee intercepted from his own half to canter in for an easy score. Harlequins followed this with a penalty. The visitors playing at speed and with a lot of width then dominated the second quarter of the game with only heroic scrambling defence from the home team keeping them out. The entire period was spent in the Trinity 22 metre zone. Amazingly the students kept their own line in tact only giving away two penalties to go into half time 16-0 down. In the second half the students started well and managed to get good field position, their forwards came more into the game and began to apply some pressure. Amazingly they conceded another interception this time the length of the field when the Harlequins wing stepped into a telegraphed pass and ran in from his own line. This effectively killed the game off as a contest. Harlequins dominated proceedings as the students were punished for every mistake. Trinity true to form kept attacking at every opportunity and scored two well taken tries by Paul Doran Jones after some heavy pressure on the visitors line. Captain Matt Crockett deservedly scored another to cap a fine individual display. Unfortunately the students leaked more tries at the other end to take a pasting on the scoreboard. This was Trinity’s first competitive game since November 11th. This is no excuse though as they struggled against a visiting team with many Ulster squad players in it. The forwards battled well and came more into the game as the match progressed. The backs need to improve in all aspects. But the game will hopefully be useful to them to assess their weaknesses and get rid of the rustiness that was there. Trinity who are bottom of the league now travel across town to St Marys College RFC who is having a very good season. Trinity team; 15 Colm Coyle (Brian Hastings 60), 14 Philip Howard, 13 Donal Crotty, 12 Barry Kinsella, 11 Shane Hanratty, 10 Johnny Watt, 9 Matt D’Arcy (Conor McShane 70), 1 Nail Conlon, 2 Matt Crockett, 3 Paul Doran Jones (Paul Doran Jones 50), 4 Martin Garvey, 5 Marc Warburton, 6 Richard Morrow (Robbie Burns 50), 7 Darren Hayes, 8 Hugh Hogan Trinity 2nds lost in a top of the league table clash with Clontarf. Trinity who were lying 3rd in the J1 league visited top placed Clontarf. Trinity played some superb running rugby in the first half to run up a 21-13 lead. They should possibly have been further ahead at half time with all the possession they had. Clontarf came back well in the second half to win 29-21. Trinity look set to qualify for the play offs and will look forward to another crack at yesterdays opposition. |
