CAPTAIN SHOWS THE WAY IN SUTTON!! 02/12/2006 Suttonians 15pts Trinity 20pts With five minutes left on the clock, it looked as if Trinity had blown an ideal opportunity to gain four hard earned points in this tough physical battle played in strong high winds in Sutton on Saturday. The students had played their best rugby of the season thus far and would have counted themselves unlucky when Suttonians kicked a penalty to go ahead for the first time15-13 with minutes to go. It was indeed a difficult pill to swallow as the students looked the better team for most of the match. As has been shown in the past of course, playing the better rugby does not necessarily add up to a win!! At this point of the game Trinity looked beaten, but the players kept their belief, dug deep playing into a very strong gale and moved the ball wide right as right wing Shane Monahan broke up his wing, when he was caught he presented the ball expertly. The ball was then moved the width of the field with precise passing to outside centre Brian Hastings who took a beautiful flat line and beat the cover defence to the left hand corner for a try which completely silenced the large vociferous home crowd. Out half Johnny Watt amazingly kicked the conversion from the corner across the wind to ice the game for the visiting team. Trinity started the game with the strong wind at their backs. Not surprisingly they dominated field position and most of the possession. In the 12th minute from a line out flanker Shane Young broke free and was stopped only metres short of the Sutton line. The forwards recycled quickly and American prop Andy King picked and stretched over the line for a well taken try. Johnny Watt kicked the conversion. Suttonians came straight back and on their first visit to the Trinity 22 metre area crucially broke through the midfield defence to score against the run of play. Playing into the elements this was a huge confidence boost for the home side. Trinity kept attacking and playing some very good rugby. Watt kicked two penalties but Suttononians must have been happy going into half time only 13-7 down. Credit must also go to the home side for some incredible defence to keep out waves of attacks from the visitors. In the second half, the game had a distinct pattern, with Suttonians kicking the ball deep into Trinity territory and the students fighting their way back into the home teams half by keeping the ball through outstanding ball retention, which was difficult as Suttonians contested every ruck physically . Significantly the students kept dominating possession and into the wind they played long periods in the Suttonians half. They of course were punished every time they turned the ball over as the home team just kicked long raking kicks into the students 22 where the visitors had to start all over again!!. With 15 minutes to go, things looked quite optimistic for the students as they dominated possession, but out of nothing Suttonians scored a well taken try out wide, fortunately for Trinity they missed the conversion and Trinity still led 13-12. The try seemed to inspire the home team to new levels of endeavour, they managed for the first time to get a real foothold in the game. After some prolonged heavy pressure Trinity inevitably gave away a penalty which the home team gratefully kicked. The rest as they say is history as the students defied the elements and won the game, Trinity have their captain Brian Hastings to thank for this crucial win. This was a great team performance that showed patience and spirit against a large well organized, very physical home XV cheered on by their vocal supporters. After the ‘Colours’ win this was an important win for the students who now face Limerick opposition in Thomond at College Park next Saturday. After five games Trinity are in eighth place in the league with next week’s opposition Thomond one place below in ninth. The top eight teams are covered by seven points.
