CHRIS JEBB LEADS THE WAY WITH FOUR TRIES!! 24/03/2007 Malone 31pts - Trinity 33pts The beautiful sunny conditions certainly made these two teams feel like running the ball, combining to score nine tries in all. Four of these tries were by 18 year old debutant wing Chris Jebb, fresh from the Trinity U20s. Malone started the game desperate for points to avoid relegation. They tried to smash their way past the students in the opening ten minutes but the visitors managed to keep their line in tact with some solid defence. Eventually Trinity lifted the siege and began to find gaps in the home defence as they played the game with great width. After some good attacks scrum half Joey Burns made a solo run to score by the posts, out half Johnny Watt converted. Trinity immediately attacked off the restart and played some superb high tempo rugby. Johnny Watt noticed another gap in the defence, took it, and off loaded to Wing Chris Jebb who sprinted 50 metres beating the cover defence to the corner. Johnny Watt converted from the sideline. Trinity were now attacking everything, keeping the ball in hand. A counter attack was launched from the half way line with several players, backs and forwards, linking with Captain Brian Hastings who sprinted clear giving Chris Jebb his second try before half time. Disappointingly Trinity lost concentration before half time and let Malone back in with two well taken tries to close the gap to 19-16 Malone came out in the second half and kicked a penalty to draw the scores level. They followed this by running from deep in their own half when the inside centre chipped and caught his own kick to break clear, he fed the supporting Malone flanker who ran in to massive cheers from the very vocal home crowd. True to form Trinity fought straight back. Conor Donohue broke the line and went close. Then the backs conspired to put Brian Hastings away. He was held up short before the ball was moved wide right and full back Paul Gillepsie kept his feet in a tackle, passed to supporting Chris Jebb who rounded the home defence for his third try. Trinity attacked again off a line out. The backs moved the ball wide to full back Paul Gillespie who broke the line to draw the last man and that man, who other than Chris Jebb, was on hand to sprint in from 40 metres for a remarkable fourth try on debut. 33-16 Trinity were still under pressure. Malone, cheered on by their amazing crowd, camped in the Trinity 22 for the last fifteen minutes of the game. They did manage to score a pushover try from a line out after Trinity went down to fourteen men following a sin bin. Crucially Malone missed the conversion along with four ill conceived drop goals. The heroic Trinity defence for the second week running held on for a great victory away from home. Special mention must go to flanker Ross Condren and second row Max Cantrell who were outstanding on defence and in the rucks and mauls. These players were ably supported by the rest of the pack. The backs always looked dangerous when attacking with ball in hand. Full back Paul Gillespie was impressive as he came into the line at speed and angle always looking to put his team mates into space. This was a character building win for the students in a very hostile environment. Trinity are now in fourth place with one game to go. A top four play off spot is the objective for the team at this stage. Young Munster are the main danger to these hopes and are three points behind with a game in hand (DLSP next week). Barnhall and Highfield (DUFC opponents on April 7th) are also in with chance of the fourth spot. Trinity Team; 15 Paul Gillespie, 14 George Byron, 13 Brian Hastings, Conor Donohue, 11 Chris Jebb, 10 Johnny Watt, 9 Joey Burns (Eddie Hamilton 65) 1 Graham Murphy, 9 (Tristan Goodbody 60), 2 Ben Cunningham (Marc Cooney 60), 3 Andy King, 4 Roger Young, 5 Max Cantrell, 6 Shane Young, 7 Ross Condren, Peter McFeely. On Sunday in the Leinster All Ireland play off in Templeville Road Trinity U20s, after dominating the first half of the game, lost out to St Marys College 18-8. The story of the game was of two halves. Trinity simply failed to convert their total first half dominance and pressure into points leading by only 8-0. In the second half the home team dominated and eventually wore down the students for a great win for St Marys. The U20s have the highly prestigious McCorry Cup to look forward to next month. Trinity U20s B won easily in their Purcell Cup game 48-5. They now play Blackrock next Sunday in Stradbrook. On Tuesday Trinity 3rds play Harvard University (USA) in College Park at 5.30pm. |
