COLOURS MATCH 17th November 2006
03/11/2006
THE BATTLE OF HASTINGS READY TO COMMENCE!
In the 2004 Annual Colours Mame the then UCD out-half Eoghan Hickey went to kick off, but when he looked up he thought somebody was playing tricks on him. He looked across at the Trinity team lining up for the kick and to his absolute horror he saw what he thought was his team mate Michael Hastings dressed in the white of Trinity. He turned to his UCD team mates and screamed “what the Hell is going on?” It was only then that it was explained to him that it was not a pratical joke at his expense, but that Michael’s identical twin brother Brian was playing on the other side!!
On November 17th at this years ‘Colours’ Match in Donnybrook, kick-off 6.30p.m., the “twins” are on opposite sides again. Inside centre Brian will be captaining Trinity and twin brother Michael will be at inside centre for the boys from Belfield. Brian studied BESS in Trinity and Michael studied Commerce in UCD. They both attended Wesley College. The boys grew up in the town of Roscrea, Co. Tipperary, playing all the usual games in the back garden - the start of a very competitive relationship. Brian played rugby for Ireland U19s and they both played on the Munster U21s squad.
At senior level Michael has generally come out on the best side of things with two wins and a draw in the three colours games so far in which they played. But Brian had the edge at U20s level with more wins than losses.
This season both players are training hard and hoping that their University Team will give them family bragging rights for the next year.
