CORINTHIANS SLIP THROUGH!! 05/12/2009 Corinthians 10pts – Trinity 7pts Trinity travelled to rain soaked Galway for this AIB league match. Corinthians have been undefeated in Corinthian park this season. As expected the conditions were heavy and wet, with a strong cross wind going diagonally from corner to corner.
Trinity played into the conditions first half and struggled to get any pattern to their game. Corinthians just kicked to the corner and then tried to force their way in from close quarters. The students defence was up to the challenge and apart from one line break Trinity would have been happy with a 3-0 deficit going into half time.
In the second half Trinity came out firing but did not manage to put points on the board. Corinthians had a stroke of luck when they hacked a dropped pass through to the Trinity 22 metre area, the ball slipped out of a ruck and the home scrum half ran over to score unopposed. This was the only action that this end of the field saw all game due to the conditions!
10-0 down with 27 minutes to play Trinity lifted their game. Full back Andy Wallace saw a penalty bounce back off the post. Trinity put their best passage of the game together and the backs executed a nice move that put centre Conor Mills away on 40 metre run. He was held up short of the goal line as the forwards from both sides piled into the tackle area. Trinity got the put in to the ensuing scrum, #8 Brian Coyle smashed his way over from close in.
Trinity, with the sniff of victory. pushed hard for the win but they could not force their way in for a score, as the home defence scrambled well and held firm.
This was another heart breaker for the students who on reflection probably deserved at least a draw.
Next week the 1st XV host Bruff in College Park, this will be the last game before the Christmas break.
