GREAT WEEKEND FOR CLUB!!! 25/02/2007 The past weekend was superb for Irish and Trinity rugby. Friday afternoon a Trinity 2nd XV played an invitation XV Kew Occasionals featuring many old boys from the club and Oxbridge. Trinity ran out convincing winners. Friday evening in Athlone Ireland U20s defeated England U20s with Trinity wing Shane Monahan scoring the only try of the evening in a 13-6 win for Ireland. In Donnybrook Ireland Amateurs beat England 20-17 with Trinity hooker Matt Crockett scoring one of Ireland’s two tries. (Well done Shane and Matt –you both got a great mention and tremendous cheer at the DUFC Corporate Dinner in the Dining Hall on Friday night!!) On Friday evening the club had its Corporate Dinner in the University Dining Hall (Commons) with 200 people attending a fantastic evening. The guest speaker Michael Ó Muircheartaigh wooed the audience with stories from yesteryear and today. On Saturday Ireland of course destroyed England in Croke Park 43-13. On Sunday Trinity had their annual ‘Parents Day’ for the U20s. Both U20s teams played in College Park, with a lunch for the parents and friends of DUFC in between the two games. This event was extremely well attended . The parents were treated to two impressive wins by the Trinity teams - the U20s B winning 12-0 against third placed Naas, followed by the U20s Ax beating Clontarf 55-11 in an impressive display of total rugby. Both teams now head their respective Divisions; although the Bs are better placed to win their league with one game to go. The A XV now travel to Stradbrook to play the star studded Blackrock College U20s laden with Irish U19s and U20s internationals, in what is sure to be a tough encounter. Blackrock also have a game in hand. It looks like Trinity will have to win with a bonus point to win the league. The winner of the JP Fanagan league will go directly to the quarter finals of the All Ireland. Second place team plays fifth, third place team plays fourth in the Leinster play off. This is the most competitive and closely run competition in recent times.
