GREYSTONES BEAT STUDENTS!! 03/03/2007 Trinity 15pts Greystones 21pts Greystones pretty much confirmed promotion to AIL Division one on Saturday, but were forced to play most of this superb encounter on the back foot. The far younger and physically smaller Trinity team dominated the vast majority of this game in what was possibly the best performance by the home team since Christmas. Credit must go to Greystones who dug in, rode their luck and kept their composure to take their chances when they did. This is why they are destined for the Big league and Trinity will have to spend another season learning how to be clinical and take their opportunities in tight games. The game was played at a very fast and sometimes frantic pace. The team’s fitness levels enabled both teams to keep up a level of intensity rarely seen in this Division. In to the wind Trinity dominated possession by keeping the ball and running from deep. They opened the Greystones defence on several occasions but great scrambling cover defence kept out the students time after time. A sign of things to come, happened when on their first sortie into the Trinity 22, The students as they were to do all game turned the Greystones attack over in a ruck, only to miss touch on the clearing kick, Greystones quickly counter attacked and two offloads later were under the Trinity posts… Trinity continued to attack playing some highly enterprising rugby. A heavy bout of pressure on the visitors line resulted in an easy penalty for out-half Johnny Watt. 7-3 to Greystones. The visitors struggled to create any continuity as they were constantly harassed by the Trinity defence. But just before half time Greystones pounced again when they broke through in the centre, and they scored out wide totally against the run of play..It was incredible for the students to go into half time 14-3 down on the run of play. In the second half Greystones did mount their own pressure but they generally turned the ball over usually at ruck time at the most inopportune time for them. Trinity eventually broke the siege and went back on the attack showing great resolve. A wonderful attack launched from deep - resulted in out half Johnny Watt chipping the cover for centre Conor Donohue to pick up and dive over for a great try. 14-8 Trinity were deservedly back in the game. Several attacks were thwarted by Greystones tenacious defence. Both teams were at this point tearing into each other. Trinity with the wind always seemed to hold the territorial advantage, but the visitors looked dangerous on the break with their speedy backs looking to counter attack any turnover loose ball which came their way. Neither team scored for a while as both teams battled for the lead. The crucial blow was to come from Greystones. From a Trinity scrum, the ball was accidently kicked through from the second row, Greystones pounced on this chance and seconds later were scoring out wide – much to the delight of their huge band of supporters. 21-8 down must have seemed a killer blow for the students. But to their credit they came back and some more heavy pressure was rewarded in #8 Peter McFeely driving over, after a line out close in. Johnny Watt kicked the conversion for a much deserved bonus point. 21-15. Trinity now take another week off before they host Oxford University captained by former Wallaby Joe Roff on March 17th . Trinity team;15 Paul Gillespie, 14 George Byron, 13 Brian Hastings, 12 Conor Donohue,11 Killian Stafford (Colm Coyle 45),10 Johnny Watt, 9 Joey Burns (Andy Dold 65), 1 Graham Murphy (Tristan Goodbody 55), 2 Ben Cunningham, 3 Andy King, 4 John Byrne, 5 Max Cantrell, 6 Shane Young, 7 Ross Condren, 8 Peter McFeely Trinity U20s A crunch decider at Blackrock was postponed for the second time because of a waterlogged pitch. Trinity U20s B unexpectedly lost to Skerries 10-8 in terrible wet and muddy conditions in Santry. This was a cruel blow to the students who only had to win, to be the league champions. They now have to wait for the result of Barnhall/Suttonians to see if they have done enough. Barnhall have to win to take the league championship.
