SUTTONIANS BEAT STUDENTS!! 01/09/2007 Suttonians 34pts Trinity 17pts For the first game of the season Trinity travelled to Sutton with a very young and inexperienced squad. Remarkably, with eight minutes to go, they were drawing 17pts all after coming back from 17-3 down. But the experience of the home team won out in the end for a deserved win for the Trinity AIL 2nd division rivals. The game started with Trinity debutant out half Mark Dufficy kicking a penalty. Sutton came back to score three tries in an impressive twenty minute period where it looked like Trinity were going to ship a heavy loss first game up. Trinity however, with their pack under massive pressure in the scrums, managed to hold on to 17-3 at half time which probably flattered the students. In the second half Trinity, playing into the wind, managed to get some possession and continuity and played some clever rugby. They worked their way back into the game. The forwards drove over from a line out close in with Roger Young scoring the try. Minutes later from a quick penalty another debutant outside centre Volney Rouse ran in from thirty metres out. Dufficy converted superbly from the corner to bring the scores level. Incredibly with the game in their grasp the students showed their inexperience by imploding, with several mental errors that just gave the home team the game. Sutton kicked a penalty and scored two tries in the last eight minutes. Trinity will hopefully learn from this experience. With five U20s players in the pack and seven on the field they stood up manfully to the massive Sutton eight. The backs, with four more debutants, showed some nice touches and look to have the makings of a creative unit. Next week at College Park Trinity play high flying Naas RFC who beat 1st Division Terenure on Saturday.
