TRINITY BACK ON WINNING TRAIL!! 04/11/2006 Trinity 18pts Clonakilty 10pts After two disappointing losses Trinity have come back and won a hard fought game at a beautiful sunny College park on Saturday. Trinity got off to a great start, when they ran the ball from their own line, wing Killian Stafford looked clear only to be ankle tapped on the half way line. They continued their attack when from a line out flanker Ross Condron drove deep into the Clonakilty 22. the ball was recycled and moved to the backs where captain Brian Hastings looked to be very close to the line, the ball was recycled quickly again and centre Conor Donohue ran a beautiful line off out half Johnny Watt to score on the 10th minute. The game was wide open early on, as both teams ran the ball at every opportunity. Clonakilty had the use of the strong wind this enabled them to have most of the territory in the first half. This they used to good effect by keeping the ball well and offloading exceptionally well out of the tackle. Trinity were made to defend for long periods as they scrambled to stop the flowing attacks orchestrated by Clonakilty’s kiwi out half Gary Cribb. Clonakilty kicked a penalty and scored a try after multiple phases and countless offloads put their wing in for a try. They continued to attack with ball in hand, with only great work rate keeping the Trinity line in tact. 10-5 at half time Trinity could count themselves very fortunate to be only five points behind. In the second half out half Johnny Watt used the wind to great effect as he pinned the Cork team deep inside their own half/22. Clonakilty still tried to play positively but seemed to run out of steam. In the 55th Minute Conor Donohue broke the defence again before drawing the cover and putting in Gareth ‘Gaz’ Murphy for a well taken try. Trinity now looked in command particularly when Johnny Watt kicked a penalty to put them eight points ahead. The game moved into the final stages with Trinity on top territory wise. Clonakilty totally ran out of ideas and this will be an important win the students. Despite the win the students are struggling to find their form. Unforced errors seem to stop dead the best opportunities they create. If they can hang on to a few more passes, and win a bit more consistent ball up front they can compete with any of the teams in this league. They now have a week off before the “colours” game with UCD in Donnybrook Friday 17th November. They will have to improve 100% if they hope to stop the boys from Belfield. Trinity team; 15 Gareth Murphy, 14 Shane Monahan, 13 Brian Hastings, 12 Conor Donohue, 11 Killian Stafford, 10 Johnny Watt, 9 Joey Burns, 1 Tristan Goodbody, 2 Mark Cooney (Ben Cunningham 60), 3 Andy King, 4 Shane Mullane, 5 Max Cantrell, 6 Ross Condron, 7 Shane Young, 8 Peter McFeely. After three very successful years, the Trinity 2nd XV are struggling at the moment with a long injury list of players, they put on a good first half before falling away to UCD yesterday. This was the first loss at J1 level in three years against UCD. It is imperative the club are competitive at this level and we get the players back playing a good level for the 2nds. They play Blackrock on Saturday (late morning) in the J1 league. The Trinity U20s A league game with Clontarf was cancelled at half time when the referee pulled a muscle in his leg. Trinity playing into a strong wind at Santry and were behind 16-8 (a try a piece) and were looking forward to using the elements in the second half. The game will be re-scheduled for later in the season. They play at Terenure next Sunday. The Trinity U20s Bs won their second league game as convincingly as they did their first by beating St Mary’s 57-10. The U20s have a lot of depth at present and this should stand to the squad in the season ahead. They play at Suttonians next Sunday. The Trinity thirds lost narrowly to Barnhall 25-17 despite leading early on. This was the Thirds first league game. They play UCD at Belfield next week. |
