TRINITY BEAT BELVO IN AIL OPENER!! 14/10/2006 Old Belvedere 10pts Trinity 20pts Trinity won their first AIL game of the season, in a tough physical encounter at Anglesea road on Saturday. Old Belvedere has had an outstanding pre - league build up winning their way through to the Leinster Senior cup final. They started the game in fine form when they physically took the game to their student opposition and with in a few minutes were on the scoreboard with what looked a well taken try. In the early stages of the game the students with nine players getting their first AIL starts looked outclassed and over powered. To the students credit they began to win some ball, and competed very well at the breakdown where open-side flanker Shane Young was outstanding. The game turned as Trinity began to move the massive Belvo pack around the field. After sustained attack and many phases, the backs broke through when Full back Gareth Murphy set up blindside wing Shane Monahan who ran through to score from thirty metres out. Johnny Watt converted. Trinity kept attacking and the home side clearly were struggling to keep up with the pace and they infringed multiple times. Johnny Watt punished them with two penalties. Things looked good for Trinity as they clearly held the upper hand going into half time 13-7 up. In the second half the students seemed to switch off offensively. They let Belvedere get back into the game with their ten man physical game. Belvo out- half Richie Murphy kicked one penalty but crucially and unusually for him missed three other long range kicks. It seemed Trinity were just sitting back, waiting to be beaten. The game slowed to a virtual stop as ‘Belvo’ dominated the proceedings. Trinity wing Killian Stafford was sin binned on 28 minutes of the second half. This seemed to kick start the students back into gear as they woke up to start attacking again. In the 33rd minute the crucial winning blow came from the students, when from a scrum the backs pulled off a beautiful set move to put captain Brian Hastings under the posts for a Johnny Watt converted try. The Trinity pack then took over with some great possession keeping play which ran down the clock with fourteen men. The Trinity fitness clearly came to the fore in the last ten minutes. This was a great win for the Trinity 1st XV. The off season has been difficult with the huge loss of 26 players to other clubs. The team has trained hard and got its just rewards with a win against a very good well drilled ‘Belvo’ squad who will no doubt be pushing for promotion at the end of the year. Trinity should not sit back as they could easily have lost this game. There is much work to do. Next week at College Park Trinity entertain Barnhall who beat Malone on Saturday 16-15. Ian Morgan’s Barnhall have been regular Trinity rivals over the past seven years and are always a tough nut to crack. Trinity team; 15 Gareth Murphy, 14 Shane Monahan, 13 Brian Hastings, 12 Conor Donohue, 11 Killian Stafford, 10 Johnny Watt, 9 Joey Burns, 1 Graham Murphy (Tristan Goodbody 60), 2 Matt Crockett, 3 Andrew King, 4 Roger Young, 5 Max Cantrell, 6 Philip Rowe (Steve Curtin 30), 7 Shane Young, 8 Peter McFeely. Trinity 2nd XV miraculously came back from 26- 10 to win in the dying minutes 29-26 against Barnhall 2nd XV. The students played poorly for the first sixty minutes but played some great rugby in the last twenty, to sneak the game against plucky opposition who had beaten UCD the week before. The Trinity U20s B beat Old Belvedere 54-7 with twenty one (of the twenty two) new players to the club, this looks good for the students who played some scintillating rugby running from everywhere in true University rugby style. The U20s A open their account next week when they travel to Cork to defend their Conroy cup inter varsities The Trinity 3rds, with only a week of training under their belt won one, lost two at the Old Belvedere J3 blitz. The best highlight of the day was their win over UCD which made the day. There is plenty of work to do though in the J3 and J4. |
