Trinity claim Colours honours in Donnybrook... 14/11/2008 TRINITY 20pts UCD 18pts – 14th November 2008 Trinity won their second ‘Colours’ in three years when they beat UCD in a truly dramatic game of rugby in Donnybrook on Friday night. Trinity played with the slight breeze in the first half and dominated proceedings for most of the opening period. Wing Chris Jebb kicked a penalty in the third minute to open the scoring for Trinity. Trinity executed some nice phases and looked dangerous only for scrambling UCD defence to keep them out. The best of these was when left wing Colin Murphy was put through off a set play and ran 50 metres before passing to right wing Jebb who went for the line, from the ensuing ruck #8 Brian Coyle looked to have scored only to be pulled back on a rather harsh “double movement” call. In the 15th minute Chris Jebb kicked another penalty for Trinity to go 6-0 up. Five minutes later UCD got on the board to close the gap 6-3. From the restart Trinity kicked deep, UCD mauled the ball up and box kicked to the Trinity Full back Paul Gillespie who caught the ball under pressure, he swiveled around beat three players to get into open space, where he simply took off for the UCD goalposts. As the UCD cover defence closed, he almost nonchalantly passed back inside to his old Kings Hospital school buddy open-side flanker and captain Shane Young who was up on his shoulder to run in from 20 metres for a superb counter attack try. Jebb kicked the conversion for Trinity to go 13-3 up. Trinity with out half Andy Wallace controlling the game well with massive long punts into UCD territory, continued to pressure making two line breaks that they could not finish. UCD kicked a penalty just before half time to close the score to 13-6 at half time. In the second half, Trinity started well with some good field position, The Trinity line out was outstanding with Colin MacDonnell and Pat Danahy along with Max Cantrell off the accurate throwing of Mark Murdock, winning their own ball and snagging several UCD throws. The scrum with Tristan Goodbody and James Gethings at prop stuck in well against huge props. The Trinity back row of Max Cantrell, man of the match Shane Young and Bryan Coyle tackled and searched for ball tirelessly in open play, ably helped by centres Richard Brady and Conor Colclough who tackled and worked heroically through out. As the game progressed UCD began to dominate possession and position. They continued to pressure, but the outstanding feature of the second half was the heroic defence of Trinity who cut down wave after wave of light blue attacks. On 60 minutes UCD did manage to get free out wide when Leinster Academy product Vasilly Armtiev took advantage of a rare system error in the Trinity defence to break free and score wide out. Micheal Hastings kicked the conversion to tie the game up. UCDs massive and far older pack turned the screw and tried to bash their way to the win. Some phases of play went to as many as 15 phases, but the Trinity team kept stepping up and making their tackles and double tackles. Inevitably after being camped on the Trinity line with a series of attacking scrums, their second row Arthur Houllihan flopped over from close in. 18-13 up with three minutes of regular time remaining, even the most positive Trinity supporter would not have given the City centre based team a chance. The last four minutes of this game was pure madness, a dream for Trinity supporters but the ultimate nightmare for the boys from Belfield. From the restart Trinity kicked deep, but UCD unusually kicked open from the receiving maul. Sub wing Shane Hanratty who had just come on to the field caught the ball on the full and put on a serious turn of speed that took him around three UCD chasing defenders. From this he ran slightly in field and was tap tackled, as he is falling he threw out what can only be described as a “Hail Mary” pass to sub flanker Johnny Iliff who had looped around to support on the touchline. Iliff takes the ball and gallops in from 25 metres out. It was notable to see the six subs making massive contributions, prop Paddy McCabe, hooker Alan Mathews second row John Byrne #8 Eddie Molloy along with Hanratty and Iliff added much needed fresh legs to the massive all round effort. Wow!! an unlikely 18-18 draw was now on the cards, better than a loss for sure. Wing Chris Jebb obviously had other idea’s, he had a conversion six inches in from the left hand touchline into the wind………….. He nails it - no worries! As the Trinity crowd and many neutrals roar their approval. The game is not over! The teams are now into injury time. UCD kick deep, Trinity held the ball with good control, UCD fighting for their lives - infringe, Trinity are awarded a penalty. Just kick it out boys, and we win!.... No chance! Scrum half Eddie Hamilton who gave an outstanding brave performance in attack and defence, sliced the simple kick in field to the gasps of everybody in the large crowd. UCD now have one last unexpected opportunity to score. They put the Trinity defence through many, many phases. But true to the rest of the game, the Trinity front line, second line and scramble defence, smothered everything UCD could throw at them. Eventually Trinity do get the ball back and they gain another penalty and no better man than Chris Jebb who kicks the ball into the crowd. The weekend long party begins!! Team; 15 Paul Gillespie, 14 Chris Jebb, 13 Conor Colclough (Bryan Johnston), 12 Richard Brady, 11 Colin Murphy (Shane Hanratty 70), 10 Andy Wallace, 9 Eddie Hamilton, 1 Tristan Goodbody, 2 Mark Murdock, (Alan Mathews 60) 3 James Gethings (Paddy McCabe 55), 4 Pat Danahy (John Byrne 60), 5 Colin MacDonnell, 6 Max Cantrell, 7 Shane Young (Johnny Iliff 60), 8 Brian Coyle (Eddie Molloy 60). UCD U20s got some revenge in Belfield on Sunday when they beat Trinity 10-0 for the first time in a couple of years. The game was extremely tight affair with only one try. These teams will meet again this season. |
