TRINITY COMEBACK TO WIN!! 08/09/2007 Trinity 22pts Naas 15pts Trinity came back from fifteen points down to win against “up and comers” Naas RFC on Saturday in the second round of the Leinster senior Cup played at College park. Naas who are back in the All Ireland league, have trained well over the summer and beat first Division Terenure and drew with St Marys College so far this season. The visitors started very well by really taking it to the students keeping the ball for long periods in the opening half. They scored three tries in the first half and looked totally in command over a very young student XV. 15-3 at half time was just rewards for the Kildare team’s dominance. Except for the odd handling movement Trinity struggled to put together any real continuity. Debutant Out half Richard Brady who usually plays his rugby in the centre for the U20s kicked Trinity’s only points. In the second half the roles were reversed and the home team began to piece some phases together. Whenever the Trinity backs got the ball they looked dangerous. Wing Shane Hanaratty had a particularly good game making several breaks himself. He moved to full back when Paul Gillespie went off with a hip injury. He was replaced by Killian Stafford who was a constant danger to the visiting defence. Trinity forwards scored the first try when Roger Young for the second week scored from close in after a line out drive. This was followed minutes later by Killian Stafford scoring his first try when the ball was moved blind off a ruck and he finished off a simple move. 15-15 The students were now playing with confidence, and it was just a matter of time before they scored. The backs moved the ball beautifully through the hands for Shane Hanratty to round the defence before drawing the Naas full back and putting Killian Stafford who had cut back inside him to support, in under the posts. The teams then battled for field position but Trinity ran out winners in the end. 15 Paul Gillepsie (Killian Stafford 55), 14 Brian Barnard, 13 Volney Rouse, 12 Chris Sale,11 Shane Hanratty, 10 Richard Brady, 9 Joey Burns, 1 Colin Goode (Graham Murphy 65), 2 Ben Cunningham (Mark Murdoch 65), 3 James Gethings, 4 Roger Young, 5 Max Cantrell, 6 Conor McGinn, 7 Shane Young, 8 Scott LaValla. In a friendly in College park a Trinity squad featuring many new freshman and a few 2nd XV players beat Aer Lingus 55-10. |
