TRINITY COMPETE IN J3 BLITZ IN CLONTARF 15/10/2005 Trinity J3s had their first outing of the season, competing the the Blitz in Clontarf and emerging with a creditable result of 2 wins and 2 losses. It should have been better as the students allowed a big but limited Clontarf team to use their only weapon, a rolling maul to score the only try of the game. Thereafter Trinity gave as good as they got and only the bounce of the ball prevented an equaliser from srum half Ralf Heffron. The blitz consists of matches of 20 minutes with no place kicking, the emphasis being on open play. In their second game Trinity warmed to the task and were worthy winners over a big Landsdowne team that tested the defence but proved vulnerable to the straight running of the fitter Trinity team with Donal Salmon’s uncomplicated style particularly catching the eye. A 15 minute break proved Trinity’s undoing for the third match as a slight complacency allowed Stillorgan to score the only try of the game. Coach Dave Robbie’s gamble of playing three complete newcomers in the same game proved to be a fatal miscalculation and although Trinity competed well for the last 10 minutes they just could not get back on even terms. The final game proved to be the finest hour for the students when a Wanderers team, hitherto unbeaten were given a sound beating with right winger Finn Power skinning his opposite number for 3 classic wingers tries in very competent all round performance that saw the rattled Wanderers side turning increasingly petulant. It seems somewhat unfair to single out individuals in what was undoubtedly a squad effort, but Dave Nolan, playing at outhalf for the first time looked assured and able in all he did, while in the pack Ben Leonard, Kevin Brennan and their colleagues relished the physical challenge of playing against much heavier opponents, while Andy McDonnell led pack and team well throughout. Lennie Von Scheel and Bastion Buhlmann played their first ever rugby matches and did not shirk the physical challenges at any time.
