TRINITY DRAW WITH OXFORD!! 14/03/2009 Trinity 24pts – Oxford University 24pts Trinity and Oxford University played out an entertaining draw in front of a large crowd on a balmy spring day in College park on Saturday. The game was particularly significant as All Black Anton Oliver playing for Oxford was playing his last game of a long and illustrious career. A draw looked the last outcome on the cards after three minutes, when the visitors strode into a 12 point two try lead with out working up a sweat. They scored off an interception for one try and two missed tackles for the other. Early in the game Trinity with several new combinations through out the team, struggled to come to grips with their more experienced opponents who tried to play and pace. To their credit the home team began to get back into the game, with the Trinity forwards forcefully taking the game to the Oxford pack. Into the breeze Trinity managed to take their opponent through several phases before the backs moved the ball wide to second row Pat Danahy (what was he doing there!) who ran in from thirty metres out. Trinity kept up the pressure with relentless attacks on the Oxford line, and after several charges at the line a maul was set up and second row Scott LaValla was driven over. 12-10 down at half time, Trinity looked in a comfortable position with the breeze at their backs. They then went ahead early in the half when big Pat Danahy amazingly intercepted a pass (what was he doing there!) and ran in from the half way line. 17-12 up the home team looked poised to run away with the game. Oxford had other ideas, and they capitalised on some poor handling errors by Trinity in there own 22. After a sequence of scrums on the Trinity line, Scott LaValla was harshly sin-binned. With the extra man this enabled Oxford to draw level 17-17. Midway through the second half Oxford who always looked dangerous in open play, took advantage of some woeful defending on the blindside by Trinity to take the lead 24-17. Trinity again came back, when out-half Micheal Boland back in the 1st XV for the first time since October broke out of defence, chipped the ball through, regained his own kick and was held up on the Oxford line. A scrambling Oxford gave a way a penalty. Trinity kicked to the corner from the penalty. From the line out the home pack drove over to score a well designed try in the corner. Boland crucially converted from the sideline to bring Trinity level, and the match to a fitting climax. Trinity with momentum on their side were not finished and attacked again, Scott LaValla broke through the middle of the visitors defence on a superb run, he again was held up by the last line of defence. The Trinity forwards piled into the ruck as though their lives depended on it, and were rewarded with a scrum. The referee blew his whistle for full time – which proved a bit of an anti climatic finish but probably a fair result in the end. Although making many errors, this was an encouraging performance by Trinity against quality opposition. The home team displayed the depth of their squad by playing 26 players, all of whom played at least 15 minutes. With five or six players back from injury or sickness next week the selectors have a few selection headaches ahead of their AIBL game against Highfield in College park next Saturday. The 2nd XV also have to win in Barnhall to keep up their chances of winning the J1 league. It was also great to see Anton Oliver give advise to the Trinity team with an impromptu 20 minute scrum session with the Trinity forwards after the game. 15 Hugo Walford, 14 Chris Jebb (Marc Hurst 65), 13 Conor Colclough (Micheal Boland 55), 12 Eoin Fleck 11 Colin Murphy (Bill Walsh 60), 10 Richard Brady, 9 Eddie Hamilton (Bryan Johnston 25), 1 Colm Goode (Tristan Goodbody 50), 2 Mark Murdoch (Alan Mathews 60), 3 Paddy McCabe (James Gethings 45), 4 Pat Danahy (Pierce Byrne 60), 5 Scott LaValla, 6 Eoin Cremin (Eddie Molloy 50), 7 Shane Young (Johnny Iliff 40), 8 Brian Coyle (Conor McGinn 65). Other news; Trinity U20s Pennant team won their last league game of the season securing a place in the plays offs and a semi final game against Bective in Donnybrook next weekend. In a winner take all game against Seapoint, the students won 15-13 in a game that both teams could have won. Trinity kicked a penalty in injury time to secure the four points for a win. Trinity J3s beat French University opposition in College park on Saturday morning 38-10.This was good preparation for the J3s cup campaign. |
