TRINITY GET FIVE POINTS AGAINST SUTTONIANS – U20s BEAT UCD!! 01/12/2007 Trinity 24pts Suttonians 15pts Trinity were made to fight to the dying minutes to secure the win and a bonus point for scoring four tries. The game was played in very cold and windy but dry conditions at College park on Saturday. Suttonians are at present bottom of the league and came into this game with the narrowest of game plans. Their massive forwards worked hard in the tight and drove all line out ball, and off rucks they used the “pick and go” with the odd pass to a close runner for variety! The smaller Trinity pack worked tirelessly for what seemed an age to get the ball back off the experienced Sutton warriors. Suttonians had the first use of the elements and dominated possession and territory. Trinity defended bravely hitting the big runners back, at times several metres. Sutton scored a penalty after three earlier misses. Trinity came straight back and scored off a scrum in the centre of the field, when they used a planned move for inside centre Paul Gillespie to slice through the visiting defence for a superb try. The Visitors came back when from a line out close in they drove over for a deserved score. It was clear Trinity had to avoid line outs close in, as this seemed to be the only way Sutton could score a try. 8-5 down at half time Trinity had the benefit of the wind. They used it wisely but struggled to get the ball off a very determined Sutton pack, who seemed content to keep the ball very close and just inch there way up the field. Not exactly entertaining fair for the supporters, but when you are battling for survival in windy and blustery conditions you have to use your most effective game plan and this was it. For the first 25 minutes of the second half Suttonians denied the students any real opportunities to break free from there grip. Suttonians eventually gave Trinity an opportunity and the students scored. From a scrum the backs broke through out wide, they quickly recycled, and captain and scrum half Joey Burns took advantage of a gap in the defence to glide through and score under the posts. Out half Johnny Watt converted. Just a few minutes later from another scrum, the backs again broke through with another planned move, and from a quick ruck, the ball was moved to Johnny Watt who passed flat to Paul Gillespie who side stepped three cover defenders to score next to the posts 19-8 Trinity. From the restart Suttonians to there credit showed great spirit and got up and won the ball, and two phases later scored themselves with a well taken try. The game was now opening up after seventy minutes of tight, tough rugby. This of course suited the home team who off a line out drove close to their opponent’s line with the forwards and Johnny Watt put a trailing left wing Colm Coyle through a gap to score a clever try to secure a hard earned bonus point for the students. This win puts the students four points behind the leaders Young Munster and UCC and they are in fifth place. A win next week in Clonakilty could put them in the top three, a loss would put them back into mid table. Clonakilty easily defeated Trinity in the AIBL cup back in October in College park, so the students know they have their work cut out for them. Trinity played their best rugby in the first half when they played some superb rugby considering the wet and muddy conditions. They managed a penalty to lead 3-0 in to the wind. In the second half they dominated territory but UCD kept the ball quite well with their massive pack. They never looked like scoring a try and flanker Conor McGinn scored the only try of the game for Trinity after some nice inter play by backs and forwards. It is always good to beat UCD but it was also important to win, to keep them in the chase in the new challenging format of the “super six”. The top three will qualify for All Ireland semi finals later in the season. Trinity U20s Bs lost a tight game to a last minute score 16-12 to Bective U20s in Santry. Trinity J4s lost to Barnhall 30-10 in Maynooth. |
