TRINITY GET THE DOUBLE OVER CAMBRIDGE!! 02/10/2007 Cambridge 22pts – Trinity 38pts Trinity had an impressive win over Cambridge University last night at Grange road Cambridge. In near perfect conditions Trinity put on a master-class in counter attacking led by Full back Paul Gillespie and his two wings Killian Stafford and Shane Hanratty. Four of the five tries Trinity scored were from running back kicks or turning over ball. The fifth was an interception from centre Volney Rouse. Cambridge preparing for there big game against Oxford in two months were motivated and were very aggressive in the rucks and mauls with there big pack. They played at pace albeit a little narrow. Trinity made there tackles, hung on and waited for there opportunity to come. Cambridge deep in their own half decided to miss pass to their outside centre to clear the lines. Volney Rouse saw the play unfolding and stepped in front of a pass to score by the posts. Out half Johnny Watt - converting. The home team continued to attack in a very direct and physical fashion led by former Otago super 14 second row the massive John Blaikie. Later in the half Cambridge kicked long, Volney Rouse retrieved the ball and switched play with Shane Hanratty who beat four defenders with a great turn of power and speed. He ran the ball up to 10 metres from the home line in a 50 metre angled sprint towards the posts, he passed to Paul Gillespie who beat another defender to score . Johnny Watt converted. Cambridge kicked two penalties through Ross Broadfoot who played for Leicester Tigers last season. Johnny Watt kicked a long range penalty from near the sideline to make it 17-6 at half time to Trinity. In the second half the home team continued to bash away at the Trinity defence. Trinity defence was generally up to the task. From a Trinity scrum the ball was moved blindside, the ball went loose in a crunching tackle, Shane Hanratty picked up the loose ball and passed to a supporting Paul Gillespie, The Trinity full back beat a defender, chipped the full back and caught the ball on the fly and casually ran round under the posts for sensational individual try. From the restart Cambridge missed touch Gillespie attacked the ball beat a clutch of defenders before passing to Hooker Ben Cunningham who took the ball on before passing to flanker Shane Young who in turn gave Conor Donohoe space to sprint to the posts and score from thirty metres out. Cambridge did manage an impressive pushover from a line out close in. This added to five Penalties from the accurate Broadfoot, kept them in touch. Cambridge kicked a long punt down field just missing touch, Johnny Watt caught the ball and passed long to Gareth Murphy who was replacing Shane Hanratty, Murphy passed long to Gillespie who cut the line and passed to wing Killian Stafford just outside his 22 but with much space in front of him. Stafford ran 70 metres before passing to supporting Volney Rouse who stepped inside the remaining cover defender to run around under the posts for his second try, fantastic stuff!! Late in the game the Trinity backs split the home defence with a well worked move that put Gareth Murphy away, he committed the full back and gave it to Paul Gillespie who looked to have scored his third try. The referee cruelly pulled the scintillating move back for a highly dubious forward pass. Trinity forwards also looked to have scored after a series of pick and goes near the line. The game ended on the Cambridge line with Trinity in control. This game was the teams first for ten years after a long tradition of fixtures. Trinity team; 15 Paul Gillespie, 14 Shane Hanratty (Gareth Murphy 50), 13 Volney Rouse,12 Conor Donohoe (Eddie Hamilton 60) 11 Killian Stafford, 10 Johnny Watt, 9 Joey Burns, 1 Graham Murphy (Tristan Goodbody 50), 2 Ben Cunningham, 3 James Gethings (Eoin O’Cuillinean 60), 4 Ciaran Condren (John Byrne 55), 5 Roger Young, 6 Max Cantrell, 7 Shane Young, 8 Richard Morrow. Earlier in the day The Trinity 2nds had a convincing win over Cambridge U21s winning 48-5 playing some superb running rugby in the second half after a competitive first half leading only 17-8. This capped a good day for the Trinity squad. Next up is Oxford University on Saturday at 12 noon. The 2nd XV play on Friday evening at 6pm. |
