TRINITY GIVE GAME AWAY! 11/10/2008 Old Crescent 19pts Trinity 13pts This was a game Trinity should have won, but probably deserved to lose because they did not take their opportunities and made some massive errors that led to points being conceded. On a perfect day for rugby, Old Crescent did not really threaten the Trinity line through out the game. The Trinity defence for the most part was good and the students stood up to the physical onslaught from their Limerick rivals. Trinity had a dream start when they dominated the opening exchanges. They were rewarded when from a scrum, scrum half Bryan Johnson broke through and passed back inside to Flanker John Byrne who was up in support to score near the posts. The kick was not converted. Trinity kept attacking, and kept the ball quite well. But crucially they gave a way an interception that enabled the home team to run the field and score. This was followed by a penalty by the home team when Trinity infringed under the posts. Trinity came back when the backs broke through out wide, hooker Mark Murdoch was on hand to crash over for a well taken try. 10-8 to Trinity. The students had field position for most of the half and game, but right on half time another massive error occurred when trying to clear the ball, it was spilled and Old Crescent to their amazement sped half the length of the field again to take a fortuitous lead. Down 13-10 at half time, Trinity now faced the slope at Rosbrien. They showed great commitment but struggled to put anything together with a combination of Crescent defence and pedantic refereeing. At times it seemed the referee was only looking at the students as the penalty count against them was steadily increasing. This cannot be looked as an excuse as they did have there opportunities. Crescent kicked another penalty and Chris Jebb kicked one in return from the corner with 6 minutes to go. Trinity tried hard to close the game but failed to do so as the little errors kept stopping their progress. The positives from the game must be that if the students cut out the unforced errors they know they can compete in this league. They also physically stood up to the Limerick men that will stand to them down the road. Next week - Trinity face a difficult trip down to Greystones on a ground where they have always found it difficult to win. 15 Paul Gillespie, 14 Chris Jebb, 13 Conor Colclough, 12 Richard Brady, 11 Colin Murphy, 10 Micheal Boland (Eoin Fleck 60), 9 Bryan Johnson (Eddie Hamilton 55), 1 Tristan Goodbody, 2 Mark Murdoch, 3 James Gethings (Paddy McCabe 60) 4 Colin MacDonnell (Pat Danahy 60), 5 Scott LaValla, 6 John Byrne (Alan Mathews 65), 7 Shane Young, Brian Coyle. Other news; Trinity 2nd XV continued their run of good form in atrocious conditions in Naas when they won out 15-0 scoring two tries in a game they totally dominated on Friday night. They now face a top of the league clash with Old Wesley on Sunday in College Park. Unusually both the Trinity U20s Premier and Pennant league games was cancelled when Naas decided to drop down a league at the last minute, and Blackrock College could not field a team at Pennant level. Trinity now face Greystones in Santry and the Pennant team play at Coolmine next Sunday. The Junior club kicked off its league campaign on the weekend with both the J3s and J4s hosting Barnhall and Clontarf respectively. Both teams went down in what would have been early days for the boys as College just started this week. As fitness levels improve it is felt the Junior club will do well – numbers are good at present. |
