TRINITY HOLD OUT FOR WIN IN BARNHALL!! 10/11/2007 Barnhall 11pts Trinity 18pts Trinity won their second AIBL game in three attempts with a hard fought win over old rivals Barnhall in a windy but dry Parsonstown ground. For sixty minutes Trinity looked good for their win and seemed to have too much for the home team as they dominated proceedings into the wind in the first half, and for the opening ten minutes of the second half. The Trinity backs always looked dangerous and their pack worked hard to provide good quality ball. In the last 20 minutes the game changed dramatically and it was all Barnhall, cheered on by their home crowd who were camped on the Trinity line when the game eventually finished. Only gutsy defence kept the home team out for the draw. Trinity scored the first try in the 2nd minute when the backs moved the ball wide and wing Brian Barnard broke the defensive line to set up opposite wing Killian Stafford for a superb 50 Metre sweeping try which out half Johnny Watt converted. Barnhall came back to kick a penalty through their out half. Trinity however seemed to dominate possession into the wind and just before half time Barnhall kicked long into the Trinity half, the Trinity backs countered impressively with Shane Hanratty breaking the line and scoring one of the best individual tries scored by a Trinity player in recent seasons. Trinity led 15-3 at half time, and with the wind at their backs looked to increase their lead in the opening minutes of the second half. They had several opportunities to put the game out of reach but struggled to finish off some great approach work. Barnhall eventually lifted the siege and played some pressure rugby of there own through their massive forward pack. They kicked another penalty and eventually scored a try after several minutes of sustained pressure and close the score to just four points. Trinity came straight back when Johnny Watt kicked a 55 metre penalty from with in his own half to take the score out to seven points. This was a good win if not a good performance for Trinity who avenged last seasons loss to the same team in College Park. They will have to improve their form if they hope to compete with the leagues top teams this season. Next Saturday they travel to Thomond in what is always a tough environment to win. 15 Shane Hanratty, 14 Brian Barnard, 13 Volney Rouse, 12 Paul Gillespie, 11 Killian Stafford, 10 Johnny Watt, 9 Joey Burns (Eddie Hamilton 70), 1 Graham Murphy (Tristan Goodbody), 2 Ben Cunningham, 3 Eoin O’Cuilleanean, 4 Scott LaValla, 5 Roger Young (Ciaran Condren 70), 6 Eddie Molloy, 7 Marc Lynch, 8 Richard Morrow; Other news; Trinity U20s played Barnhall U20s in their last group A match. The game was a curtain raiser for the above 1st XV AIBL game. Trinity won out easily 78-15 scoring some excellent tries in a impressive 15 man display. They now play in the “super six” competition with the top six U20s teams in Leinster. They will be joined by Blackrock College, Lansdowne, UCD, St Marys and Naas in a home and away format. On Thursday night Trinity 2nds cruelly lost 23-20 at Suttonians. In a game that hung on the final play of the game, Trinity had a penalty kick to draw but the ball blew off the kicking tee as out half Micheal Boland attempted to level the scores from in front of the posts. This was indeed cruel luck and kind of summed up the evening. Trinity 3rds beat Suttonians in Santry 22-5 in a much improved performance by Dave Sullivans men. The 3rds played some good rugby but little errors cost them more scores. Trinity U20s Bs lost a nail biter 28-27 in College Park in a game they led right up to the last few minutes. Trinity J4s game with St Marys was moved to a later date because of the Leinster/Leicester European cup game. |
