TRINITY LOSE ANOTHER TIGHT ONE! 15/01/2011
Trinity 8pts – Corinthians 10pts. The students had another heartbreaker on Saturday in Santry. The game finished with a kick to draw the game in this evenly contested All Ireland Division 2 match. The game was dominated by a strong wind straight down the field. Corinthians had first use of the wind and generally kicked for position. Trinity however with their options limited kept the ball for long periods of time, and played some very good running rugby from inside their own half. Frustrating unforced errors seemed to stop many of the student attacks, just as they got themselves into promising positions. With all their field position Corinthians did a kick a penalty and just on half time scored a soft try from Trinity’s perspective. 10-0 down at half time Trinity attacked deep into the visitor’s 22 metre area. They forced a penalty which full back James O’Donoghue kicked. 10-3 with 35 minutes to go, the Students must have fancied their chances to record a win. But Corinthians dug deep and kept the ball in hand denying the home team decent ball. The referee started to penalise the frustrated home team and the visitors were clearly on top for most of the second half. In the last ten minutes Trinity launched an all out attack and lay siege to the Corinthians line. Twice they looked to have cracked the Visitors line but bad luck or poor execution denied the home team the vital score. On the last play of the game scrum half Mick McLoughlin pounced to score out wide on the left hand side. The conversion was pulled in front of the posts. Trinity did get a bonus point for losing within seven points. Trinity are off next week, before they play five games in a row. They start with Bective in College Park. Trinity team; 15 James O’Donoghue, 14 Neil Hanratty, 13 Conor Colclough (Dave Joyce 70), 12 Tim McCoy, 11 Shane Hanratty, 10 Ciaran Wade, 9 Sam Bell (Mick McLoughlin 60), 1 Paddy McCabe(Colm Goode 50) 2 Craig Telford (Tim O’Mahony 70), 3 James Gethings, 4 Julian Mackey (Max Waters 50), 5 Pierce Byrne, 6 Dermot O’Riordan, 7 Dominic Gallagher, 8 Scott LaValla; Other news; Trinity J1s continued their good form with a tight 16-13 win over Old Wesley avenging a defeat by the same opposition before Christmas. They moved into third position in a very competitive league. Some teams do have games in hand on the Students. They host Clontarf in College Park next Sunday. Trinity U20s Premier XV also avenged an earlier defeat winning by the tightest of margins against a strong Old Belvedere 12-11 in Anglesea Road. The Students dominated most of the game both territory and possession wise but looked in trouble with five minutes remaining as Belvo had their purple patch. Left Wing Niyi Adeolukan had other ideas as he scored a “wonder try” from 40 metres out to give Trinity back the lead. The game finished up with a savage defensive stand by the away team, to hold out for a deserved win. They play Blackrock in Stradbrook next Sunday. Trinity U20s Pennant XV short of many of their regular players as College is not back until 17th January lost to Old Wesley, a team they had beaten by 40 pts earlier in the season. Hopefully next week they will be able to continue their good season with all hands back on deck.
