TRINITY LOSE KICKING CONTEST! 13/12/2008 UCC 23pts – Trinity 10pts The biggest difference between these two college teams at the Mardyke Cork was the home team kicked their points opportunities and Trinity did not. The game was played in excellent conditions for this time of year and each team scored a try a piece. The game started with UCC taking the game to their college rivals from Dublin. Their out half Gavin Dunne kicked two penalties early on which really proved to be the story of the day as the Trinity’s indiscipline was cruelly punished. Trinity dominated the second quarter of the game and wing Chris Jebb kicked one opportunity but missed three others in the first half. Dunne continued to kick take his opportunities from anywhere inside the Trinity half of the field. UCC led 12 -3 at the half. The second half started with UCC scoring their try from a kick from out half Dunne which was cleverly put in behind the fast advancing Trinity backs. Two passes later UCC were in for their only try of the day. 17-3 down Trinity threw everything at the Cork students and after heavy pressure on the UCC line second row John Byrne got in for a try which out half Andy Wallace converted. 17-10 and back in the game Trinity pressed to level the scores and continued to chase the game. But Gavin Dunne kicked two more penalties to take his team out of range. This was another disappointing result for Trinity, who on the run of play possibly deserved at least a bonus point out of the game. They go into the Christmas break on three tough losses. Hopefully the players can rest up mentally, improve physically and be back in the New Year ready to get back on the winning trail.
