TRINITY LOSE T|O INTERCEPT IN LAST TWO MONTHS! 25/03/2011
DLSP 19PTS Trinity 16pts – Friday, 25th March. After three big wins in a row Trinity came back down to earth with a lifeless performance on Friday evening in Kirwan Park. The students never really got out of first gear and still, with two minutes to go, they led 16-12. DLSP were clearly up for a win and played a very physical direct game. Trinity easily dealt with these tactics but never really fired any shots themselves as they struggled to get any continuity or shape to their game. Fortunately for Trinity, Full back James O’Donoghue had his kicking boots on and he slotted everything that came his way. DLSP first try was from a Trinity scrum, the ball squirted out the side and the home team re-gathered to score. In the second half DLSP were awarded a scrum, quite how the referee missed the two knock on’s and a forward pass amazed even the most staunch home supporter!!Trinity responded well to this score and threatened to cut loose when they scored a well taken try by centre Tim McCoy who cut a nice line to beat the drifting defence on a rare sweeping back line movement. In the later stages of the game, the home team clearly began to lose their way against the Trinity defence and Trinity began to dominate territory and possession. With two minutes to go the Students looked good for the win as they began to keep the ball well, but the home second row intercepted a pass and ran 60 metres for an unlikely try. This was a distinct step back for the students in terms of result, performance and effort. They now play Old Wesley in Donnybrook on Friday night, the last game before the Colours two weeks later. 15 James O’Donoghue, 14 Neil Hanratty, 13 Ciaran Wade, 12 Tim McCoy, 11 Shane Hanratty, 10 Dave Joyce, 9 Mick McLoughlin, 1 Ian Hirst, 2 Tim O’Mahony (Craig Telford 60), 3 James Gethings (Paul McFeely 50, 4 Jullian Mackey (Alan Mathews 45), 5 Pierce Byrne, 6 Colin MacDonnell, 7 Dominic Gallagher, 8 Johnny Iliff. In the Purcell Cup,The U20s pennant XV got back on the winning trail with a great win over old Belvedere 33-20 in Santry. The pennant played outstanding running rugby and scored some terrific tries through good handling and continuity. |
