TRINITY LOSE TO YOUNG MUNSTER!! 21/01/2007 Young Munster 27 Trinity 10pts On Sunday Trinity travelled to Limerick to play Young Munster. Some harsh lessons were learnt as the students were punished for crucial defensive errors during the game which was played in steady rain for the most part. Trinity played down the slope but into the wind in the first half. In the first 30 minutes the two teams sparred for position, and it has to be said the Trinity defence was impressive as they knocked their opponents back at the point of contact. Trinity managed one or two breaks in this period but failed to finish off promising moves. On 32 minutes the game changed as from a scrum on the half way line, the Young Munster #8 showed a clean pair of heels to the visiting blindside defence and was hauled down by the cover defence about three metres out, “Munsters” quickly recycled and moved the ball wide left to score in the corner. From the restart the home team came back up the field. Trinity were judged to have infringed and the Munster kicker duly obliged with three more points. Trinity kicked the restart straight into touch. From the centre field scrum Munster struck again as they used their numerical advantage to good effect to score in the corner. 17 pts in five minutes was a hard blow to the students who up until this period looked confident and well in control of the game. With the wind in the second half, Trinity worked hard to close the gap. They dominated field position but struggled to break the line or finish off half breaks in a very stop start type of game with lots of whistle. Out half Johnny Watt kicked a penalty. This was followed by heavy pressure on the home teams line and eventually prop Andy King dived over to score. 17 -10 with ten minutes to go. The students looked in good position. Young Munster got a couple of penalties that got them into field position and their kicker struck the killer blow 20-10 five minutes to go. The home team scored another try on full time which slightly flattered them on the scoreboard. This was a tough loss to the students who worked hard all day but never seemed to get the rub of the green. They play UCC in Cork next week in a league game that will also decide the Universities Dudley Cup. 15 Paul Gillespie, 14 Shane Monahan,13 Brian Hastings,12 Conor Donohue, 11 Killian Stafford (George Byron 60), 10 Johnny Watt, 9 Eddie Hamilton (JoeyBurns 70), 1 Graham Murphy, 2 Matt Crockett, 3 Andy King, 4 John Byrne (Tom Walsh 65), 5 Roger Young, 6 Ross Condren ,7 Shane Young, 8 Peter McFeely Sunday was a busy day for the club. The Trinity U20s beat Old Belvedere 40-10 in a very impressive performance by backs and forwards. Results elsewhere went their way and now all the top five teams in the league have one loss each, so there is everything to play for. The Trinity U20s B were back on the winning trail when they beat Clondalkin and Tallaght 38-10. The Bs played some great running rugby securing the bonus point for four tries. The Trinity 3rds won in Santry 43 – 0 against Suttonians, playing some good open rugby. On Friday evening the Trinity 2nd XV put in a much improved performance before (only 10-5 after 45 minutes) losing 38-12 to top of the J1 league Old Belvedere in Anglesea Road. The team scored two of the best tries seen by any team in the club this season. |
