Trinity ruin the Party 18/04/2009 Trinity 13pts Lansdowne 12pts College Park was certainly the place to be on Saturday on a beautiful sunny Saturday afternoon. The largest crowd for many seasons turned up to see these two Dublin City clubs go to battle. With some of the former legends of Trinity rugby looking on, after a well attended Hall of fame lunch in the dining Hall for Trinity - British and Irish Lions. The current Trinity 1st XV led by captain Shane Young put in their best performance of the season with a stunning win against table toppers Lansdowne. The win unfortunately for the visitors looks to have taken them out of the promotion race on the last Saturday of the season. It leaves 3rd place Ballynahinch only having to win at a re-scheduled home game next Saturday against mid table Highfield. The game was played at break neck speed and the physicality from both sides was impressive, but the students were good value for the win, playing virtually all the good rugby on the day. Lansdowne started well and got territory early on, they managed to get three points up with their excellent kicker Ostheizen striking the ball well. Trinity came back, and began to get good field position. They also dominated possession keeping the ball very well into the breeze with back row players Brian Coyle and Eddie Molloy carrying the ball well along with centres Eoin Fleck and Conor Colclough.. Half way through the first half they struck and scored the only try of the game. They patiently took the massive Lansdowne team through several phases at a good tempo protecting the ball with good numbers at the ruck. The ball was moved from sideline to sideline. The right wing Tim McCoy was put away on the right flank, Trinity quickly recycled and the ball was moved to second row Scott LaValla - who had an outstanding game - hit a fantastic outside line to drift through a gap in the defence and ran in from 30 metres out. Out half Richard Brady added the conversion. Trinity drew huge confidence from this score and continued to take the game to their illustrious opponents packed with Leinster A, Academy players and underage internationals. Only some strange referee decisions at the breakdown kept the visitors in the game as the home forwards played way above their weight picking off line out ball against the throw Pat Danahy getting three steals, and standing up forcefully in the scrums with front row James Gethings, Mark Murdoch Colm Goode along with Tristan Goodbody (in the second half) stepping up with the help of their hard working back five to get important angles on the scrum along with stoic defensive play. Lansdowne kicked another penalty after breaking out after a Trinity turnover. The visitors kicked for position a lot and the home full back Paul Gillespie was magnificent in catching everything and running the ball back. 7-6 at half time to Trinity the students turned around with the light breeze at their backs. Lansdowne came back and kicked a penalty in the opening minutes to regain the lead. Trinity crucially came straight back to kick a penalty by replacement out half Micheal Boland who coolly converted from 35 metres out. Trinity continued to enjoy good field position and Micheal Boland kicked another penalty from closer in as he began to put his own stamp on the game with delightful touches and long punting of the ball for position. Trinity were also trying too retain the ball through the phases. Twice Trinity looked to have broken free to score in the left corner but scrambling Lansdowne defence kept them out with left wing Killian Stafford who always looking dangerous on the day going close both times. Inevitably Lansdowne put some pressure on the home team and forced a penalty which they kicked. The score was now 13-12 to Trinity. Lansdowne are not top of the league for no reason and they were always going to have their purple patch, they used their giant forwards and backs to hammer away at the sides of the rucks, and in particular up the inside centre channel, but the students to a man were equal to the challenge and knocked them back with great gusto. From a line out near the Trinity line second row Pat Danahy picked off a hugely significant line out ball from a Lansdowne throw. A minute later on the last play of the game Trinity managed to get a massive turnover in a ruck as the visitors looked set for a drop goal. Trinity Scrum half Eddie Hamilton who had a fine game bossing the forwards, kicked the ball off the field to the delight of the home players and supporters. Unfortunately for Trinity, Old Crescent pulled out a last minute 21-19 win in Malone, that means Trinity will be fifth place and miss the top four play offs. This will be the last game of the season fro the students. 15 Paul Gillespie, 14 Tim McCoy, 13 Conor Colclough, 12 Eoin Fleck, 11 Killian Stafford, 10 Richard Brady (Micheal Boland);, 9 Eddie Hamilton, 1 Colm Goode (Tristan Goodbody), 2 Mark Murdoch, 3 James Gethings, 4 Pat Danahy, 5 Scott LaValla, 6 Eddie Molloy, 7 Shane Young. 8 Brian Coyle; Subs not used Sam Bell, Pierce Byrne and Alan Mathews. Other news Trinity U20s A in the McCorry cup finished their season with a 14-5 loss against UCD in College park in a very entertaining game. UCD took there chances and deserved to win the game. The vast majority of the Trinity team will be back to play U20s next season. The Trinity U20s Pennant team beat UCD 3rd string 68-5 in a tremendous display of running rugby in Belfield. They now play Old Wesley U20s first string in the Purcell Cup semi final in Ballychorus next Sunday. |
