TRINITY SCRAPE BY INSTONIANS 28/03/2009 Trinity 17pts – Instonians 13pts Trinity moved into sixth place in the AIBL Division 2 on Saturday with a very scrappy, inconsistent performance against bottom team Instonians. The game was played on the rock hard surface of College park. The students welcomed back former team mate and out-half Johnny Watt to his old stamping ground. The visitors were far hungrier in the first half as they played the game as if their lives depended on it. This game was probably their last realistic opportunity of survival. Because of this they really took the game to Trinity and possibly should have won the game by 50 minutes into the game. They missed several kicks and one or two opportunities to score tries. Trinity on the other hand had a middle of the table look about them, and only really came to life early into the second half. They did score one try when the forwards caped on the visitor’s line and eventually second row Scott LaValla ran a nice angle to barge over for the only trinity score of the first half. Instonians led at halftime 13-5. In the second half Trinity began to take control as the visitors visibly tired, and seemed to break the Belfast team’s line when ever they could generate some continuity and quick ball. On 50 minutes the forwards drove the ball up before releasing the backs, stand in out half Richard Brady put the ball inside to #8 Brian Coyle who in turn fed captain Shane Young, The skipper then off loaded to inside Eoin Fleck who put his centre partner Conor Colclough in under the posts with a beautifully timed pass for a superbly taken team try. Ten minutes later off a scrum deep in the Trinity territory, the backs cut loose gain when Brady broke free fed Conor Colclough who ran 40 metres before putting full back Paul Gillespie away out wide. Gillepsie who had a magnificent game, ran to the corner flag before executing a perfect switch with left wing Neil Hanratty to score another well taken try. Trinity were now after the bonus point that would give them an outside shot of a top four place and a play off chance. Although the forwards were now totally in command this objective they could not manage. They were unbelievably whistled for penalties five times, five metres off the Instonians line, each time in possession of the ball. In fairness the referee was consistent and Instonians were also penalised two or three times in the first half in similar positions. Trinity now have two league games to go and plenty to play for. They have a bye this week. But travel to highly professional Belfast Harlequins on the 11th April, to a ground they have never won. This will be followed by the grand finale of the season, a home game against top of the table Lansdowne in College park on April 18th. 15 Paul Gillespie, 14 Colin Murphy, 13 Conor Colclough, 12 Richard Brady, 11 Neil Hanratty, 10 Dave Joyce (Eoin Fleck 45), 9 Eddie Hamilton, 1 Colm Goode (Tristan Goodbody 55), 2 Mark Murdock (Alan Mathews 65), 3 James Gethings, 4 Pat Danahy, 5 Scott LaValla, 6 Eddie Molloy, 7 Shane Young, 8 Brian Coyle Other news. The J1 won the league yesterday without kicking a ball with nearest rivals Old Wesley losing at Terenure. Congratulations to the players and management!! On Friday at 6pm they play the J1 “Colours” V UCD, which will be the final league game of the season. The club are appealing to all our supporters to come out on Friday night after work or college, and cheer the lads on against the old rivals from Belfield in College park. After the game they will be presented with the Pennant and medals. See you there!! The J3s lost their cup game V Monkstown 24-12 in a game they could have won. The J4s also lost 35- 18 to AIB. This ends the Junior clubs respective cup campaign. Next week they tour to Oxford University to finish up the season. |
