TRINITY SLIP INTO RELEGATION DECIDER 09/04/2005 Unlike last week when something seemed to be lacking, Trinity made a massive effort and ultimately went down to two big plays by the visiting team. This game was always going to be difficult with both teams needing a win to secure their safety for next season. With a strong wind going straight down the field Trinity won the toss and elected to play into it. They played a near perfect game (without scoring a try) as you can get. They kept the ball and incredibly kept Carlow in their own half for almost the entire period. Simon Mitchell kicked a penalty, but the students should have capitalised on their domination by scoring more points. A combination of Carlow’s stout defence and some tolerant refereeing where the ball was slowed down by visiting players off their feet and seemingly offside at the breakdown, kept the visitors line in tact. None the less Trinity should have scored more points. Carlow kicking machine Richie Murphy did kick two of his own penalties on rare sorties in the students half. Trinity was reasonably happy only 6-3 down into the elements. In the second half Trinity forced the play and missed a kickable penalty. Carlow then forced a turnover and immediately kicked the ball through behind the home defence and their wing won the chase to score in the corner, Murphy expertly converting from the touchline into the wind. Trinity continued to attack but gave away another questionable penalty. Carlow noting several home players turning their back ran the ball wide for the first and only time in the game. They broke open wide out and forwards and backs linked to score a well taken try. 20-3 down Trinity to their credit came back hard but could not break the visiting defence who were lucky not to get at least two players sin-binned for a number of offences, mainly for illegally slowing the ball down. The game progressed into the final minutes, Carlow eventually did get a player sin-binned Trinity forced a scrum on their opponents line and drove the Carlow seven back, captain Hugh Hogan picked up the loose ball and wing Phil Howard scored. Simon Mitchell kicked the conversion. From the restart, Trinity went back on the attack and ran the ball well with the whole team linking well. Unfortunately time ran out and for only the second time this season they did not secure the bonus point for losing within seven points. With Lansdowne winning away in Clontarf, the students now face Landowne in Lansdowne road next Saturday. The loser will have to play in a play off against third place second Division team probably UCC. With injuries mounting the next week is vital for the student club. Team; 15 Simon Mitchell, 14 Phil Howard, 13 Barry Kinsella, 12 Brian Hastings, 11 Brian Canavan, 10 Mark O’Neill, 9 Paddy McCormack, 1 Niall Conlon (Eoin McBennett 72), 2 Matt Crockett (Keith Murphy 72), 3 Forrest Gainer,4 Declan McDonnell (Guerrmo Barsano 68) 5 Marc Warburton, 6 Tim Jago, 7 Hugh Hogan, 8 Jamie Heaslip. Under 20s through to semi final of “All Ireland” Straight after the Senior game. The Trinity U20s took the field against Garryowen in the quarter-finals of the All Ireland U20s championship. The home team got off to a stunning start when they scored 15 pts in the first ten minutes. The students high tempo game looked too much for the visitors as they created many scoring chances. Left wing Micheal Kavanagh appeared on the right wing to finish off one superb handling movement, and #8 Peter McFeely ran 70 metres on a interception to score the second. Trinity out-half Jonny Watt kicked a conversion and two penalty to give the students a 18-3 lead at half time. Garryowen to their credit came back into the game with the wind. They struggled to make any headway against the well-organised home defence. Watt kicked another penalty for Trinity as the students always looked dangerous particularly out wide. Garrowen came back aggressively and Trinity controversially had two players sin-binned for technical offences. Garrowen forced the ball over off a line out, and dominated the last five minutes on the Trinity line. Trinity down men dug in deep and showed great resolve to hold the Limerick men out for a 21-14 win. They now play Corinthians (who beat Malone) next Saturday at 4.30pm in College park. The other semi final will be UCD/Lansdowne. Trinity 2nd XV won through to the quarter finals of the Metropolitan cup with a convincing 42-10 win over Leinster J1 Division three champions Railway Union. Trinity played some superb rugby in the first half to score all their points. This has been a super season for the 2nds that are in the League play offs and the Metro quarter finals. |
