TRINITY START NEW YEAR WITH A WIN!!! 06/01/2007 Trinity 29pts – Bective 21pts Trinity started the New Year on Saturday with a much needed win against a very experienced Bective Rangers XV on an unusually sunny January day which provided perfect conditions for this time of year. Under a new coaching set up, Bective came into College Park on a two game winning streak. With former Leinster out half Fergal Campion pulling the strings they dominated territory in the opening minutes. Campion kicked his first penalty in the third minute. Trinity came back with some attacking play keeping the ball in hand through several phases. Johnny Watt levelled the game with a drop goal. Campion then kicked another penalty followed by a massive drop goal from about 45 metres out. Trinity came back with Johnny Watt kicking two penalties of his own. Another Trinity movement involving backs and forwards was brought back for a dubious forward pass when centre Conor Donohue looked to have scored in the corner. Trinity played some super rugby in the first half in a wide open game. From a scrum on the right hand side of the field, the backs scored from a cleverly worked set move that put full back Paul Gillespie in under the posts for a superb try. Watt Converted. A few minutes later Bective attacked in the backs only for some aggressive Trinity defence that led to prop Andy King picking up a loose ball after a big hit in the centre and skilfully feeding captain Brian Hastings who used his quick hands to put flying wing Killian Stafford sprintint 60 metres untouched for a try in the corner. 21-9 up at half time Trinity looked almost clear. In the second half Trinity continued to attack and Johnny Watt kicked another penalty after a heavy bombardment of the Bective line. Minutes later Trinity were on the attack again after some good ball carrying and continuity by the forwards. Trinity actually turned the ball over on the Bective line, only for the visitors to clear poorly under pressure. Flanker Shane Young caught the loose ball and beat the defensive wing to the corner. At 26 – 9 and three tries on board Trinity looked set for a five point haul if they could just score another try in the last 30 minutes of the game. This scenario never materialized as the big Bective pack seemed to take over the game against a home team who clearly let their intensity levels slip. Bective decided to keep the game tight to great effect and managed two pushover tries from line outs close in. Trinity to their credit kept the visitors out on two more occasions when Bective had line outs near the line. It was not pretty but it was the only thing that really worked for the Donnybrook team. Sandwiched in between the two tries Watt kicked a penalty to keep the lead to two scores. This was an important win for Trinity if they hope to keep up their challenge to the top teams in the league. They are now fourth on 21 pts, but eight points behind second placed Greystones (29 pts, game in hand) and ten points behind top team Old Belvedere (31pts). With seven games to go, there is everything to play for as the top teams have to play each other. The league is so even this year that Trinity are only 11 pts ahead of bottom placed Middleton (10pts). There will be interesting days ahead. Trinity have to concentrate on things under their own control such as the always tough trip to Limerick, to play the famous Young Munster club in their own back yard. This game is scheduled for Sunday 21st January and closely followed by another away trip to Cork to play UCC on the 27th January. The 1st XV are off next week; Trinity team; 15 Paul Gillespie, 14 George Byron, 13 Brian Hastings, 12 Conor Donohue, 11 Killian Stafford, 10 Johnny Watt, 9 Eddie Hamilton (Bryan Johnston 70), 1 Graham Murphy (Tristan Goodbody 68), 2 Matt Crockett, 3 Andy King, 4 John Byrne, 5 Roger Young (Ciaran Condren 70), Ross Condren, 7 Shane Young, Peter McFeely. On Thursday 3rd January, Trinity U20s hosted two games against World famous Stanford University from California USA who are celebrating their centenary this year. Its is part of the Trinity ‘strategic plan’ to play the top Universities in the world, and it was great to get away from the grind of local competition and play against something very different. Stanford 1st XV with some very impressive looking athletes, including four players off their Gridiron football team, came out fired up. They played some sound rugby particularly in the set piece and in defence in the first half, keeping the very fluent Trinity team to only three tries - but they fell away as the U20s upped the tempo and ran out convincing winners in the second half. The undefeated Trinity U20s Bs was far too good in a shortened game against a very inexperienced Stanford 2nd XV. As they say, the game was more important than the score and the day was most enjoyable for everybody concerned. Trinity host Harvard University in March. |
