TRINITY THROUGH TO McCORRY CUP FINAL!!! 12/04/2008 Trinity 18pts Blackrock 15pts This was a sweet win for the Trinity U20s at Templeville road on Saturday. During the season these two teams have had two massive league encounters with Blackrock winning 23-18 and 17-15 leaving the students feeling sorry for themselves as they felt they could have won both games. Both teams were down players with injury and unavailability but they produced a pulsating cup semi final game. In wet conditions Trinity had to narrow their game plan. They played into the wind in the first half and played most of the half just outside their 22 metre area. Blackrock and Ireland U20s out half Ian Madigan punished the students with three penalties from close range. Trinity then answered with a superb try. From a line out just inside the Blackrock half the ball was moved to the middle of the field. From the quick recycle the ball was moved to out half Harry Murphy who attacked flat and held the ball up to put full back Tim McCoy through a yawning gap. McCoy did the rest as he sliced through the first line of defence and rounded the full back to score wide out. 9-5 Blackrock - Game on!! Madigan kicked another penalty just on half time to extend the lead for his team. In the second half Trinity enjoyed the conditions as their fired up pack began to dominate the set piece particularly the line out and the point of contact. The forwards smashed into the opposition as they drove and carried the ball. Blackrock simply could not hold the red and black machine. It was no surprise when from a line out they drove thirty metres, Blackrock infringed for a penalty and the ball was kicked into the corner and the pack did the rest as they drove in for a collective try. Wing and captain Chris Jebb kicked a difficult conversion to draw the scores level. To their credit Blackrock managed to get back into the Trinity half and Madigan kicked what looked like a crucial drop goal to regain the lead. On this day Trinity was not to be denied as Chris Jebb quickly kicked a penalty after a series of charges at the Blackrock line by the Trinity forwards. At 15 -15 the teams tried hard to get the vital field position for the final push for victory. In the last five minutes Blackrock were called twice for foul play by touch judges. This gave the students the much needed position in which to launch their attack. This duly came as after more concentrated driving play by the forwards forced Blackrock into another penalty skipper Chris Jebb stepped up to kick the match winning points. Trinity now wait to see who they play in the final which is provisionally booked for Sunday 27th April in Donnybrook 3pm. The other semi final is between Lansdowne and UCD which is to be played next Sunday. Trinity team;15 Tim McCoy, 14 Chris Jebb, 13 Conor Coclough, 12 Charles Coyle, 11 Colin Murphy, 10 Harry Murphy, 9 Mark Reidy, 1 Colin Goode, 2 Marc Murdoch, 3 Paddy McCabe (James Gethings 50), 4 Scott LaValla, 5 Pierce Byrne (Dermot O’Riordan 40), 6 Conor McGinn, 7 Johnny Iliff, 8 Dave Wilson (Cillian Suiter 40) In other news; Six Trinity players represented Irish Universities against France in Lyon last weekend.
