TRINITY UNLUCKY AGAIN!! 10/10/2009 Thomond 26pts – Trinity 20pts Trinity somehow transpired to lose this game. After coming back from 16-3 down they took the lead to go 17-16 only to lose 26-20. This was the same score as last week. Trinity started the game poorly with a massive unforced error in their own dead ball area, leading to the home team taking an early 7-0 lead. Trinity came back to kick a penalty through out half David Joyce.
With a strong breeze Munster squad out half Declan Cusack kept punishing the students with a drop goal and two penalties to build a solid 16-3 lead without really having to play any constructive rugby.
In the second half Trinity started to play the game in the right part of the field and were rewarded with three penalties in about 20 minutes.Trinity were now looking comfortable dominating the game and taking the game through several phases. David Joyce broke free and kicked the ball through for his captain flanker Johnny Iliff who out-sprinted the cover for a well taken try. 17-16 up, Trinity continued to dominate territory, as the home side looked out on their feet.
Fate was to turn again against the Visitors when from a miss struck box kick by the Thomond scrum half in his own 22 metre zone - went straight up into the air. The home side got a fortuitous bounce, as Trinity failed to gather the ball, and went the length of the field to score a most unlikely try, much to the delight of the home supporters.
Thomod then applied some pressure on their only visit to the Trinity half and kicked another drop goal through Cusack. Trinity to their credit came back to kick another penalty to earn a much deserved bonus point.
