Trinity Well Beaten. 28/01/2006 Trinity 8pts Lansdowne 33pts Trinity lost on Saturday at College park to a high-flying Lansdowne XV who had three players who played for Leinster the night before.
Trinity came out unusually flat and were punished by the visiting team. Lansdowne scored two early tries and Trinity scored one of their own when open-side flanker Darren Hayes backing up a passing movement by the backs ran in from 40 metres. Unfortunately from the restart Trinity were slow to move to the ball, and Lansdowne gathered and moved the ball to score. This was a cruel blow as Trinity had worked hard to get back into the game.
Lansdowne fresh from a 71-15 win over Blackrock, were confident in everything they did. Former Ireland and current Leinster scrum half Brian O’Meara playing at out half dominated proceedings and generally pulled the strings to their fast moving game. Leinster flanker Niall Ronan was also outstanding forcing turnovers as Trinity were sloppy at the breakdown.
In the second half Trinity came more into the game and worked hard to pressure the visitors line, but Lansdowne broke out and scored two more tries.
his was a disappointing performance by the students who after four tough games in four weeks looked physically and mentally tired. The team now have a week off and play Queens University in the Dudley cup on Saturday 11th February. KO 12 noon.
All is not lost, the students have a game in hand (Carlow) and must pick up a win to drag back the teams above them.
15 Donal Crotty, 14 Philip Howard, 13 Barry Kinsella, 12 Brian Hastings, 11 Shane Hanratty, 10 Johnny Watt (Paul Gillespie 55), 9 Joey Burns, 1 Nial Conlon (Killian O’Neill 68), 2 Matt Crockett (Mark Cooney 78), 3 Paul Doran Jones, 4 Martin Garvey, 5 Marc Warburton, 6 Darren O’Reilly, 7 Darren Hayes (Robbie Burns 55), 8 Hugh Hogan.
Sunday was a great day for the club.
The 2nd XV with some players back from injury played their last league game and had to win to get a home draw in the play offs. They defeated Bective at Donnybrook 36 –17. The forwards were dominant and the backs ran nice lines in a convincing display. The 2nd XV finished a creditable fourth in a 17 team league. They now play a home league quarter final next Sunday probably against Lansdowne in College park 2.30pm
The U20s A completed their league season undefeated for the first time with a 31-7 win over third place Blackrock College. The team scored five tries and had the bonus point sorted by half time. UCD whom Trinity have beaten twice this season already, look set to win the league due to bonus points. The U20s season is all about the All Ireland championship and this win gives them home advantage in the play offs. The U20s have a week off before playing UCD in the first round of the McCorry cup.
The best performance of the weekend was by the U20s B squad who travelled to Skerries on Sunday afternoon, and scored two tries to nil in a 12-6 win. The last few minutes of the game was played out on the Trinity line with the large home crowd cheering on their team. The students showed great character in holding on and now will play a Donnybrook final against the winner of Suttonians and Bective semi final which will be played 12th February. The date for the final is to be arranged.
The Senior 3rds had a great 36-32 win over their Bective counterparts as they compete hard to make the play offs in their grade..
