TRINITY WELL BEATEN BY DLSP! 16/12/2006 DLSP 27pts Trinity 10pts This was a “shocker” for the students. After five wins in a row, and having worked their way to a very respectable fourth place in the table, Trinity totally took their eye off the ball and were well beaten by the team in second from bottom place. The All Ireland Division two is a hugely competitive and physical league where any team is capable of beating another on any given Saturday. Within four and a half minutes of the start of the game, Trinity were standing under their posts facing a second conversion. Both DLSP tries came from speculative high kicks that the Trinity defence failed to retrieve. The ball was then hacked through for two tries to the delight of the home crowd and players. Trinity were 17pts down in twenty minutes as they were punished for continual unforced errors. This was also the score at half time. Trinity had their opportunities, but lacked cohesive play and decision making to force the score. In the second half Trinity dominated territory but could not make any headway with a combination of physical defence from the home side and spilled balls in scoring situations for the students. Johnny Watt kicked his first penalty early in the second half, and Trinity supporters would have expected the usual characteristic comeback from the students. The comeback simply did not materialize as DLSP grew in confidence. The home side kicked a penalty of their own to keep the margin at 20-3. Trinity only score came from multi phase play with Johnny Watt hitting Conor Donohue wide and the centre took the ball into the corner, Watt converted 20-10. Trinity continued to attack but could not score. It was no surprise when against the run of play DLSP came up the field and scored from close in to clinch a highly deserved win. This was a highly disappointing performance by Trinity. Hopefully a huge lesson has been learned going into the New Year. Trinity play First Division Blackrock College in Stradbrook on the 30th December (12 noon KO) in a friendly, before league action resumes on the 6th January against Bective in College Park.
