TRINITY WIN AIL OPENER IN DONNYBROOK!! 27/10/2007 Bective 6pts Trinity 31pts Trinity won their AIBL league opener on Saturday with an impressive clinical display in the “work in progress” developing Donnybrook. Trinity won the game five tries to nil and secured a very important bonus point. Bective opened the scoring with former Trinity full back Simon Mitchell characteristically kicking the points. Trinity came back when after a series of phases out-half Johnny Watt got in behind the home defence to put his wing Killian Stafford in for a well taken try. Mitchell scored again with a penalty to regain the lead for his new club. Trinity came back again with another well taken try from a set move centre field when full back Paul Gillespie split the home defence for a superb score. 10-6 up at half time and with a strong breeze behind them Trinity looked good for the win. Bective of course felt differently and lay siege to the students line using their massive pack who battered the Trinity line with a sustained bout of charges and drives. Trinity heroically held out and this seemed to take the sting out of the home team. The Trinity pack followed this with their own sustained driving play on the Bective line. Out half Johnny Watt made a half break and found his outside centre running a great line to score by the posts. 17-6 up The students were now looking for a bonus point and this duly came when #8 Richard Morrow showed a nice glimpse of skill to chip the cover and wing Killian Stafford caught on the bounce to run in before returning a pass to Morrow to score under the posts. Later in the game from a turnover the ball was moved wide to Killian Stafford again after a nice break by Eddie Hamilton. Stafford ran in unopposed. Trinity went close on two further opportunities but could not score. This was a nice start for the students. Next week they face a Mighty challenge when they host “odds on” league favourites Belfast Harlequins in College Park at 2.30pm KO. Harlequins had nine players on the Ulster A team that played Leinster A last weekend, they are coached by former South African coach Alan Solomans. So this should be one of the toughest challenges of the season for “The Trin”. Team; 15 Paul Gillespie, 14 Shane Hanratty (Eddie Hamilton 74), 13 Volney Rouse, 12 Eoin Fleck (Richard Brady 68), 11 Killian Stafford, 10 Johnny Watt, 9 Joey Burns, 1 Graham Murphy, 2 Ben Cunningham, 3 Eoin O’Cuilleanean (Tristan Goodbody 50) , 4 Roger Young (Alan Mathews 60), 5 Max Cantrell(Scott LaValla 50), 6 Eddie Molloy, 7 Marc Lynch, 8 Richie Morrow. |
