TRINITY WIN IN GREYSTONES! 18/10/2008 Greystones 23pts – Trinity 27pts For long periods of this game, it looked liked Trinity would be well beaten. But tremendous team spirit and fitness won out in a fast and furious game at Dr Hickey Park Greystones on Saturday. Greystones scored in the first minute, when they counter attacked a poorly chased kick to score under the posts with a superbly taken try. Trinity came straight back and Chris Jebb kicked a well struck penalty to narrow the lead. Greystones kicked another penalty in the 7th minute to go 10 -6 up. At this point in the game, Greystones were playing all the rugby and the students were just scrambling on defence trying to keep them out. In the 17th minute Chris Jebb kicked another fantastic penalty into the breeze to keep Trinity in touch against the run of play, Greystones came back in the 20th minute when their hooker amazingly kicked a drop goal. The score remained the same for the rest of the half, with the home team dominating possession and field position, but unable to break the defensive line of the students. In the second half Trinity had the wind at their backs, but again gave the home team a soft try when they broke through a middle of a ruck on half way, and linked well to score by the posts. At 20-6 and the large home crowd vociferously cheering them on, things looked bleak for the students who had hardly fired a shot on attack and could not allow another score if they had any hopes of getting some league points.. Trinity to their credit came back five minutes later, when after some sustained pressure led to out half Richard Brady delghtfully putting wing Colin Murphy through a small gap to score under the posts. This score seemed to give the visitors belief and the whole dynamic of the game changed. Trinity began to put some phases of play together for the first time and the home team began to visibly get tired. Trinity began to win the point of contact as they competed aggressively at the rucks. In the 64th minute Trinity attacked wide to put Chris Jebb away, they swept 70 metres to be stopped just short of the line. From the resultant scrum Trinity tried to push the home team over the line. After two attempts the referee awarded a penalty try which Jebb converted. Greystones did get back into the Trinity half, after a poor clearance kick by the students. Greystones was awarded a penalty, which their out half James Power kicked. 23-20 with ten minutes to go, the students went for the win with their best rugby of the game. The home team kept the students out…just. In the 73rd minute Trinity broke out of defence to nearly score a superb try with several players handling. Crucially the game was to be settled in the next phase of play, when there was a series of scrums in front of the Greystones posts. Three times Trinity turned down the easy kick at goal to draw the game, Greystones under severe pressure had a player sin binned and eventually the scrum wheeled and buckled for replacement scrum half Eddie Hamilton to crash over and score near the posts rewarding the bravery of Trinity captain Shane Young in going for the win. Chris Jebb converted. This was a hugely significant win for the students against a well drilled outfit in Greystones. To do well in the leagues you have to win ugly as well as the spectacular and the students won ugly on Saturday, they have certainly played better and lost in the past year or so. The Trinity scrum and great team defence certainly won the day. When the team starts too click on attack they could be a very potent force to deal with in Division Two of the AIBL. Team; 15 Tim McCoy, 14 Chris Jebb, 13 Conor Colclough, 12 Paul Gillespie, 11 Colin Murphy, 10 Richard Brady, 9 Bryan Johnston (Eddie Hamilton 40), 1 Tristan Goodbody, 2 Mark Murdoch, 3 James Gethings, 4 Pat Danahy, 5 Scott LaValla, 6 John Byrne (Max Cantrell 50), 7 Shane Young, 8 Brian Coyle Other news; Trinity 2nd XV hosted league leaders Old Wesley undefeated so far this season at College Park on Sunday. The 2nds attacked from the first whistle and destroyed the visitors 29-0. This was very impressive considering the severe windy conditions that made open rugby very difficult. The big Trinity pack dominated the set piece and the team linked well in open play. Next Sunday Trinity play the other undefeated team in the league DLSP in Kilternan. This is the first time in three seasons, that the 2nds have been so competitive, as a consequence the senior squad have genuine competition for places. The Trinity U20s had their first league game of the season in Santry Vs Greystones. The windy blustery conditions on the open spaces of Santry made any type of accurate constructive rugby very difficult. Trinity with a virtually a new squad and no starters from last season, attacked constantly but handling errors stopped any real continuity in the first half. With the wind at their backs they were only 14-7 up after gift wrapping an interception to Greystones. In the second half into the teeth of the wind they turned in an impressive display of ball control and ran in some superb tries to win comfortably in the end 35-12. Next week they travel to Belfast for the Conroy cup inter-varsities. Trinity U20s B had their first game of the season with 16 of 22 players playing their first game for the club in Coolmine RFC on Sunday. They too struggled for cohesive play in the conditions but won convincingly in the end 21-7. They have a bye next week. Trinity J3s were well beaten 38-15 in DLSP but scored three superb tries. Trinity J4s went down to Terenure 27-8 but the performance was much improved over last week. |
