TRINITY WIN IN TERENURE!! 15/09/2007 Terenure 16pts Trinity 23pts Trinity won their second Leinster cup group game in a row, but just fell short of qualifying for the last eight of the Leinster senior cup quarter finals. The cobbled together XV showed great spirit and deserved their win on the day. Full back Shane Hanratty pulled up in the warm up which did not start the day well for the students who had already lost their hooker Alan Mathews the night before the game. Playing into a breeze, Trinity conceded territory for most of the first half, but always looked dangerous on the break whenever the opportunities arose. Terenure opened the scoring when their former Leinster Out half David McCallister stroked over a drop goal. The students came back with some fine continuity that led to them receiving a scrum near the home team’s line. From this out half Richard Brady broke blind to give wing Brian Barnard a blind pass out of a tackle for Barnard to crash over in the corner to score his first try for the club. Terenure then scored a try through their backs when they moved the ball wide and outnumbered the Trinity defence to score a disappointing easy try by Trinity standards. The students came back keeping the ball in hand. They scored again when captain Joey Burns went over for a fine try off a ruck. In the second half Trinity tried to use the strong breeze to gain territory. They did this for the most part, but the game struggled to get out of second gear. Trinity always looked dangerous when they could string some phases together, but this was rare in a stop - start affair. Several times they went close to scoring without managing the desired result. They did manage one try in the second half when second row Max Cantrell finished off a counter attack to show an impressive turn of speed to round the cover and score. Brady converted from the corner. Brady kicked two penalties to ice the game for the students. Terenure came back late to score but the students held on. Team 15 Killian Stafford, 14 Chris Sale (Colin Murphy 45), 13 Volney Rouse, 12 Conor Donohoe, 11 Brian Barnard, 10 Richard Brady, 9 Joey Burns, 1 Graham Murphy (Colm Goode 55), 2 Mark Murdoch, 3 James Gethings, 4 Roger Young, 5 Max Cantrell (Dan Brennan 78), 6 Conor McGinn (Mark Lynch 60) 7 Shane Young, 8 Scott LaValla. In a ridiculously early J1 league game opener Trinity went down 19-17 to Barnhall at College Park. With College not starting for another three weeks this was a game Trinity should have won. The game was notable for the return of back row Eddie Molloy who played the entire game, his first in two and a half years out with injury. Welcome back Eddie! Trinity led 17-7 into the second half, but Barnhall wore down the untried home team to win out. |
