TRINITY WIN IN WET CONDITIONS! 01/10/2011
Trinity 21pts – Greystones 8pts; Trinity won their opening game of the Ulster Bank League on Saturday with a comprehensive win over newly promoted Greystones in very wet conditions in College Park.
Greystones set out their stall from the kick off by playing a very direct ‘pick and go type’ game. In the conditions this worked for them as they kept the ball for long periods. The Students played be a bit more expansively, but tended to turn the ball over more easily. The Students defence was again impressive and energetic. On five minutes Trinity were on the scoreboard after some impressive approach work saw them camped on the Greystones line. After several charges at the line veteran flanker Johnny Iliff exploded over the line for a try. Captain Dave Joyce converted. Greystones dominated territorially for most of the half and they forced a penalty which they kicked. More pressure saw the home team in trouble with the referee and Trinity were reduced to 13 men with two players in the sin bin either side of half time. During this period Greystones took full advantage and scored their only try. 10-8 Trinity at half time. When back to 15 men the students upped the tempo of the game and played some good rugby considering the conditions. From a grubber kick through from scrum half Mick McLoughlin chasing wing Niyi Adeolukan fell on the loose ball to score. From here Trinity did not look back and added two more penalties as the visitors clearly struggled to keep up with the fast tempo set by the students. Note: Next Friday October 7th - Trinity play Bective in the All Ireland League at 7.30pm in Donnybrook. 15 James O’Donoghue, 14 Ariel Robles, 13 Ciaran Wade, 12 Paddy Lavelle, 11 Shane Hanratty (Niyi Adeolukan 40), 10 Dave Joyce, 9 Mick McLoughlin, 1 Ian Hirst, 2 Warren Larkin (Tim O’Mahony 70), 3 Paddy McCabe, 4 Colin MacDonnell, 5 Julian Mackey (Eamon Guinan 65), 6 Johnny Iliff, 7 Dominic Gallagher,8 Jack Dilger (Colin Goode 68) Other news; Trinity U21s Premier and Pennant won trial games with Clontarf and Wanderers 40-12 and 14-0 respectively. These games will help sort out the teams for the opening of the U21s leagues next weekend. Likewise the J3s and J4s played 34 players against Old Wesley in Donnybrook.
