TRINITY WIN 2Nds WIN THE DOUBLE!! 03/04/2009 Trinity 2nd XV 13pts – UCD 2nd XV 0 Trinity celebrated winning the J1 league and the “J1 colours” on Friday night before a large crowd at College park on Friday evening. The game that was effected by the rain that came in an hour before the game. UCD fielded a strong team and were clearly up to ruin the party. They started strongly but were kept out by strong defence by Trinity who showed why they have let in under 100pts in 15 games this season. Trinity began to assert their dominance in the forwards but struggled in the conditions to really use the ball to any good effect. Out half Micheal Boland who had a good day with the boot both from the ground and from hand, he kicked three points just before interval . The 3-0 score line summed up the tightness of the game at half time. In the second half Trinity dominated in all areas of the game. The forwards pounded the UCD defence who were certainly up for the fight. The game changing moment came early in the second half when from a scrum #8 Eddie Molloy broke free showing a surprising burst of speed he in turn fed Matt Childs (Nipper!) who ran in from 20 metres out to swan dive over for a well worked try, much to the joy of the home crowd. This put Trinity 10 pts ahead. Trinity continued to pressure but the combination of the ever increasing poor conditions and plucky UCD defence kept the home team out. Micheal Boland crucially kicked another penalty to increase the lead to 13-0. The Trinity 2nds have been a complete team this year with a very strong and deep squad. The scrum has dominated all comers led by dominating props Craig Telford, Paddy McCabe Andrew Brooks and Tristan Goodbody (just back from injury) along with Cillian Suiter and Alan Mathews at hooker. Pierce Byrne, Colin MacDonnell Ciaran Condren, have been superb at line out time. At the break down, Trinity have been extremely fortunate to have quality back rowers in Richard Morrow, Conor McGinn, Gavin Redmond and Eddie Molloy. In the backs, scrum halves Mark Reidy Andy Dold (both out half and scrum half), and Matt Childs have always stepped up. Out halves Micheal Boland, Dave McGuire and Andy Wallace (early on) have always controlled the games well. In the centre Bryan Johnston (scrum half also), Eoin Fleck, Charles Coyle and Marc Hurst have all defended soundly and have been keen to make a break. In the back three Hugo Walford, Bill Walsh, Colin Murphy have all proved great finishers out wide. And last but not least The squad have been superbly led by captain open side flanker Johnny Iliff who has led by example and shown a fantastic attitude towards 2nd XV rugby when many have considered him to be a 1st XV choice. On the management front, Trinity have been lucky to have coaches of the calibre of Damien Quinn and Noel Hayden on hand. Behind the scenes 1st XV manager John Young has always been on hand to help out and delegate (sub-let)!! At what would they have done with out Johnny Iliffs Mum ‘Dee’ who always supplies soup and sambo’s straight after every game!! Very much appreciated by all. With the 1st XV only losing one game since Christmas (against AIB cup winners Ballynahinch) the senior squad look poised for a great season for next year. Trinity 1st XV have two games remaining on the next two Saturday’s, Belfast Harlequins and Lansdowne.. Other news Trinity Ladies XV won the AIB plate on Saturday in 19 minutes of extra time “golden try”. This was a great reward for much hard work by the Ladies club who are going from strength to strength. Well done Ladies!! The Trinity U20s pennant XV played well to win their 1st round Purcell Cup game against Newbridge with a hard fought 31-26 win. In a game they looked well ahead by 19pts. Newbridge came back to lead only for Trinity to score a superb try out wide to win the game. |
