TRINITY WIN OPENER AGAINST CLONAKILTY!! 04/10/2008 Trinity 13pts Clonakilty 3pts Trinity, fresh back from their training camp in the USA, won their first AIBL game at wet and windy College park on Saturday. Last season Clonakilty embarrassed Trinity twice in the AIB league and cup, so a victory here was a huge boost for the confidence of the students. Both teams struggled to get a lot going offensively. Defences and the conditions ruled the day. Trinity certainly had more opportunities to score as the visitors rarely threatened the home teams 22 metre area in the entire game. The only scores in the first half were two penalties, out – half Michael Boland slotted an easy one for the home side, and Clonakilty returned the favour with a strike on half time. In the second half Trinity continued to dominate territory. Michael Boland kicked a long range penalty and this was followed in the 60th minute when they scored a well worked try off a line out from #8 Brian Coyle. At 13 -3 Trinity looked set to increase their lead. They could not manage to do this, and the scores stayed the same for the rest of the game. A crucial win to get the AIBL campaign under way for Trinity, who now travel to Old Crescent next week for what is always a tough encounter. The Rosbrien ground has been unhappy hunting for Trinity who have not won there in recent times. 15 Paul Gillespie, 14 Chris Jebb, 13 Conor Colclough, 12 Richard Brady, 11 Killian Stafford (Andy Wallace 45), 10 Michael Boland, 9 Bryan Johnson (Eddie Hamilton 65), 1 Tristan Goodbody, 2 Mark Murdock, 3 James Gethings (Paddy McCabe 60), 4 Colin McDonnell (Pat Danahy 68), 5 Scott Lavalla, 6 John Byrne (Alan Mathews 68), 7 Shane Young, 8 Brian Coyle. On Sunday, College Park was basking in sunshine - a direct contrast with the day before. The Trinity 2nd XV fielded the strongest team seen in a couple of seasons against Carlow. Backs and forwards ran riot as the “two’s” won out 78-0. Trinity scored 12 tries and 9 conversions. The work done by the senior squad on the training camp in the USA is already starting to pay dividends with two good wins on the weekend. The past week Trinity U20s had two friendly/trial games against St Mary’s and Lansdowne respectively. On Wednesday a new look Trinity won out 21-12 using 31 players. On Sunday against Lansdowne, Trinity used 28 players going down 31-22 to their close rivals after leading with fifteen minutes to go. With a lot of hard work to put in, Trinity look to have the talent for another strong U20s squad. They travel to Naas for their first league game next week. |
