TRINITY WIN OPENING CUP GAME!! 09/09/2006 Barnhall 7pts – Trinity 48pts A totally new look Trinity XV took the field in Barnhall and came away convincing winners against a badly under strength home outfit. The students always seemed to have the upper hand as they tried to find their combinations in this Leinster Senior Cup group game. The first half was very competitive, if error strewn, as typical early season mistakes crept into virtually every aspect of the game. Both teams fumbled try scoring opportunities in the first half. The students also lost Richie Morrow in the first minute with a suspected dislocated shoulder. This is a cruel blow to the Ballina native as he has worked so hard this summer in the weight room. It was scrum half Joey Burns who created the first score when from bad ball in behind him he sold two outrageous dummies running backwards, created space and took it before passing inside to flanker Ross Condren who in turn passed to fellow back row member Philip Rowe to score by the posts. This was quickly followed by inside centre Conor Donohue celebrating his return to rugby after a ten month absence through a groin injury breaking the line and running 60 metres for a well worked try. Barnhall to their credit came back just before half time when they kept the ball through several phases and scored a converted try. 14-7 at half time. In the second half the home side could do very little right, and it seemed they were punished for every mistake by a student team hungry for action. Backs and forwards linked up for Trinity to score some fine tries. Out- half Johnny Watt kicked an early penalty, which gave the students breathing space and they seemed to kick on from there. Wing Killian Stafford finished off a fine handling movement by the backs. Donohue scored his second try when he rounded the cover defence in typical style. Johnny Watt, newcomers prop John Clarke and flanker Steve Curtin announced there arrival to Trinity rugby with one try apiece. Johnny Watt kicked five conversions. This was a good start to the season for Trinity, although of course they must not get carried away. Barnhall come to College park in late October for a vital league clash with a much different line up, and that game will be totally irrelevant from what happened last Saturday. On Thursday night at 7.30pm Trinity will face a much sterner test when they meet Clontarf consistently one of the top four clubs in the country. This will give the young College team and its coaches a sense of where they really stand this season, and how much work there is to do. Trinity team; 15 Gareth Murphy, 14 Shane Hanratty (Paul Gillespie 60), 13 Brian Hastings, 12 Conor Donohue, 11 Killian Stafford, 10 Johnny Watt, 9 Joey Burns (Brian Johnston 74), 1 Graham Murphy (John Clarke 40), 2 Ben Cunningham (Matt Crockett 40), 3 Triston Goodbody, 4 Shane Mullane, 5 Richard Morrow (Steve Curtin 1), 6 Philip Rowe, 7 Ross Condren, 8 Peter McFeely. On the back pitch at Barnhall the clubs respective 2nd XVs played in a friendly/trial match. Trinity playing some superb running rugby winning 43-25. |
