TRINITY WIN THIRD LEAGUE GAME IN A ROW 05/11/2011
Trinity 28pts Old Crescent 10pts Trinity hosted Old Crescent on Saturday on a beautiful sunny Autumn day in College Park. Both teams came into the game with only one loss on their league record and were keen for a win to stay near the top of the league. Trinity started brightly on 4 minutes when they attacked from deep in their own half and scored as good a try that this old ground has seen over the years. Scrum half Mick McLoughlin started the move and prop Ian Hirst carried up the middle, before the backs and forwards moved the ball first wide to the left touch line and then wide right for hooker Warren Larkin to receive a pass from centre Ciaran Wade for what was a breathtaking start to the game. Trinity continued to attack but Old Crescent scrambled well on defence as they tended to give away several penalties under consistent pressure. Fortunately Out Half and Captain Dave Joyce had brought his kicking boots and he nailed two penalties and the conversion for the try. Just before half time Trinity scored another well taken try. Yet again, they moved the ball though several phases before right wing Ariel Robles scooted around the cover defence to score in the right hand corner. 18-0 at half time. The students looked in a good position to press on, but Old Crescent forwards were a handful in the tight and kept the ball for long periods albeit in the narrow channels. Trinity forwards stepped up to the mark and gave physically as good as they got. From heavy pressure on the Visiting team line Old Crescent infringed and Dave Joyce kicked another penalty. 65 minutes into the game Trinity scored again when prop Paul McFeely flopped over from close in after the Trinity forwards had camped on the opposing teams goal line. The disappointing aspect of this game was at 28-3 and 15 minutes to go Trinity looked set for a bonus point - scoring four tries, but they failed miserably letting Old Crescent get back into the game and not really getting possession or position on the field. The Limerick men finished strongly and deserved their try towards the end. 15 James O’Donoghue, 14 Niyi Adeolukan, 13 Ciaran Wade, 12 Paddy Lavelle, 11 Ariel Robles, 10 Dave Joyce (Cathal Marsh 65), 9 Mick McLoughlin (Billy Glynn 65), 1 Ian Hirst, 2 Warren Larkin (Tim O’Mahony 45), 3 Paul McFeely (Andy Keating 70), 4 Colin MacDonnell, 5 Jack Kelly, 6 Brendan O’Connell (Johnny Iliff 50), 7 Dominic Gallagher, 8 Jack Dilger; Other news; Trinity J1s were well beaten by a star studded St Marys College team 43-12. The score does not really reflect the game. Trinity played well for long periods but were hit on the break for several long range scores. They should also have taken the numerous opportunities that they created on attack. Trinity J3s had a hard fought win in Naas on Friday night, 7-3 in difficult muddy conditions. The Trinity lads dug in for their fourth win out of five games. They now stand second in their league. Great work from the J3s. Trinity U21s Premier had a bye. Trinity Pennant XV had a tough loss away to UCD 38-6 in a game that they stayed close for 50 minutes 15-6. But they let the Belfield outfit get well ahead on the unfamiliar all weather surface. This was disappointing for the students who had several players unavailable and lost their out half Tim Coughlan in the first minute. They were top of the group going into the game. They now need to win in Suttonians next Sunday to qualify for the U21s Pennant “Super Six” top division which will be played out for the rest of the season. Trinity J4s lost an entertaining encounter to Barnhall 23-16 in a game they went close to defeating the top team in the league. This squad is improving every week. Go J4s!
