TRINITY WIN TWO IN A ROW AGAINST BECTIVE! 10/02/2010
Bective 12pts Trinity 17pts Trinity had an impressive win last night in Donnybrook against high flying Bective who were hoping to move into second place in the league with a win against the students. Trinity had other ideas on a beautiful clear but cold evening in The game started at frenetic pace with both teams attacking with ball in hand. This seemed to play into the Visitors hands as the home team struggled to keep up with their far younger rivals. Trinity played some magnificent rugby in the opening thirty minutes executing their game plan in fine style. They kicked penalties twice in the opening minutes as Bective infringed with their goal line wide open for scores, to take a 6-0 lead Out half Dave Joyce slotting the kicks. It was on 20 minutes that Trinity scored their only try of the game, and it was a stunner. The play started deep inside the Trinity 22 metre area. Second row Scott LaValla intercepted a speculative pass by the Bective scrum half. He ran 70 metres only to be caught on the angle by the Bective cover. LaValla then held the ball up for supporting wing Neil Hanratty who took the ball a few more metres, the ball was quickly recycled and passed out to Dave Joyce who audaciously put in a line drive cross kick to the waiting left wing Colin Murphy who handed off his opposite man in dramatic style to score in the corner. The teams then traded penalty kicks, 11-3 to Trinity at half time. In the second half, Bective came back into the game as it deteriorated into a mire of endless and needless penalties. Trinity worked hard on defence and seemed to get turnovers at the most opportune moments. They increased their lead to 14-3 early in the second half. As the game progressed, Bective attacked more and more through their big heavy forwards. They got a penalty of their own to close the score, but Trinity came back with a great attack which led to another penalty. Trinity themselves were being whistled for penalties unmercifully and it was difficult for the students to get into the game. On 72 minutes Bective closed the score to within one score when they were fortuitously awarded a put in to a scrum. From this they took advantage of a 14 man Trinity and scored in the corner. Trinity supporters braced themselves for a final Bective surge, but it did not materialize as the Trinity forwards raised their game, and dominated the closing stages deep into home territory, keeping possession close in to play out the game. The game ended with a cultured kick to touch by tight-head prop James Gethings. This was a significant win for Trinity who are beginning to hit their stride albeit a little late to compete for promotion. They move into eighth place with four league games to go. They play Highfield next up on February 20th in 15 Andy Wallace (James O’Donoghue 30), 14 Neil Hanratty, 13 Conor Colclough, 12 Conor Mills, 11 Colin Murphy, 10 Dave Joyce, 9 Mick McLoughlin (Sam Bell 70), 1 Tristan Goodbody (Paddy McCabe 70), 2 Mark Murdoch, 3 James Gethings, 4 Scott LaValla, 5 Pierce Byrne, 6 Alan Mathews, 7 Dominic Gallagher, 8 Brian Coyle Other news On Monday evening Trinity 2nd XV were unlucky to lose to J1 leaders Old Belvedere 28-20.
