UCD DELIVER A TOUGH LESSON! 18/11/2011
UCD 31pts Trinity 9pts
Trinity, who have been having a good year in League play to date, came down to earth with a bang in a disappointing ‘colours’ performance for the City centre based University team.
Trinity looked good early on and seemed to win the early exchanges and dominate territory. Captain and out half Dave Joyce kicked a couple of penalties on 12 and 18 minutes. UCD came back to kick two of their own through out half Niall Earls. The game was very much ‘tit for tat’ in the first half as the teams respective defences dominated any real attacking play.
The two out halves exchanged two more penalties and the game looked set for an arm wrestle. Crucially three minutes before half time Trinity had their scrum half Michael McLoughlin sin binned for slowing down ball. This somewhat inconsistent sanction by the referee, seeing that UCD had not had anyone sin-binned early on for several infringements while on defence, was a tough pill to swallow for the men in white. To their credit UCD took full advantage of the one man extra and scored ten points in the first ten minutes of the second half.
In the second period the Belfield team took full use of anything that came their way, and the fact that all their three tries came from turnover ball sums the game up. It is difficult to defend that.
The game was hotly contested and very physical at the breakdown, Trinity had the edge at scrum time and UCD edged the line outs. The back lines cancelled each-other out for the most part. The game was played at a very fast tempo.
In recent times the ‘Colours’ has been a tough game to call, in the past seven matches each team has won three games each - with one game drawn.
Trinity now turn to league play this weekend when they travel to Midleton in a crucial game for vital league points.
