Owen Doyle, Saturday’s lunch-time speaker, is a former International Referee who controlled 17 Test matches from 1984-94, including Rugby World Cup in 1991.

He retired following Scotland v South Africa in ‘94 and then took up the role of Director of Referees with the IRFU. Owen built very secure systems which ensured that talent could rise quickly to the top, and he led Irish refereeing through a period of unprecedented success.

He managed and coached Irish referees through countless Guinness Pro14 (then the Celtic League) and Heineken Cup matches (including 6 HC finals) and a remarkable tally of over 250 International matches, including the 2007 RWC Final.

Latterly, Owen has written very thought provoking and informative columns in the Irish Times on refereeing and game issues.
