Michael Edward Gibson was educated at St. Andrews College, Dublin and Trinity College before joining Lansdowne where he won 5 of his 10 Irish caps. The other 5 were gained while with Cork Con and London Irish, having moved residence in connection with his career with the Guinness Group.

He played for Leinster many times and toured New Zealand with the Irish Universities in 1978. At 6’6 he was a serial winner of the ball at the tail of the lineout and as a number 8 (sometimes at lock) he was a talented ball carrier in open play. He played also for the Barbarians and Wolfhounds and played a starring role with the Wolfhounds in the Hong Kong sevens in 1983 when they were narrowly beaten in the semi final by New Zealand who went onto win the trophy.

His international career extended from 1978 to 1988 and he probably would have won many more caps were it not for his moving around in connection with his career with the Guinness Group. He made a great contribution to Lansdowne which he captained in the season 1982/83 and won Leinster senior cup medals in 1979, 1980 and 1981 and a Leinster league medal in 1981.

He was also captain of London Irish and ultimately president of that club and had the distraction of playing with both Leinster and Munster.
